New Nexus Phone Launch Date: What to Expect

Published

on

Last night, Google sent out invitations for an Android event set to take place on October 29th in New York City. And while the company did not specify what it would be announcing, rumor has it, that at the very least, it will be a new Nexus smartphone possibly dubbed the LG Nexus 4. Here is what to expect from Google’s new Nexus phone launch date.

Until last night, we believed that the new Nexus phone would be shown off by Andy Rubin, Google’s Android head, on October 29th at the All Things D: Dive Into Mobile. While that’s still possible, what’s more likely is that the device will be shown off at an event scheduled for 10AM in New York City.

The event promises that the “Playground is open” and again, while it doesn’t say Nexus anywhere, it does say “Android event” and we know of no other reason why Google would schedule a press event other than to talk Nexus.

The new Nexus looks set for an October 29th debut.

Fortunately, we know a great deal about the presumed Nexus smartphone already. The device is rumored to be called the Nexus 4, possibly the LG Nexus 4, and it’s said to feature a 4.7-inch HD display, quad-core processor, 8MP camera, at least 8GB of storage space, 2GB of RAM, a 9.4mm design and some version of Android, possibly a new version. It will also likely offer some the benefits of a Nexus smartphone including quicker updates and an unlocked bootloader.

It’s an intriguing device to say the least, especially if the price is attractive.

The Nexus may not be the only thing that Google talks about on October 29th though. There are rumors of a new version of Android, possible Nexus smartphones from other manufacturers and updates to the current Nexus 7 tablet.

That being said, here is what you should expect from the new Nexus phone launch date.

A Way to Watch

Unlike Apple and its hardware launch events, Android manufacturers generally provide a way for the general populous to follow along online. Google is no different and will likely be providing a way for Android enthusiasts and average consumers alike to watch the event as it unfolds.

We fully expect the event to be live streamed that day and those who are interested will likely be able to find the live stream at Android’s home on YouTube which of course is https://www.youtube.com/android.

Longer Event

Those who are looking to follow the event should expect a fairly lengthy announcement as this is one of Google’s biggest launch events of the year.

Last year’s Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich launch went on for an hour but this time around, we expect Google to not only detail the Nexus and quite possibly a new piece of Android software, but quite possibly a new tablet, the Nexus program as a whole, and maybe some other unannounced products.

Expect the event to be at least an hour in length and it’s possible that it may stretch closer to two hours this time around.

New Nexus Smartphone

Google has not confirmed anything yet but it’s clear, given the leaks and timing, that there will be a new Nexus phone announced at the event. Right now, all bets are on the LG Nexus 4 being the device that is announced for this year’s Nexus, a device that will be following in the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus which launched initially on Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

This looks to be the new Nexus phone, the LG Nexus 4.

There is also talk of other Nexus devices, possibly from HTC, Sony and Samsung though right now, those devices remain firmly if the shadows, if they even exist at all.

So at this point, it’s perfectly acceptable to expect at least one Nexus smartphone but don’t be shocked if Google pulls something out of its hat at the event in New York City.

At Least One Release Date

The Nexus 4 is indeed out in the open but what we don’t know yet is whether it will be heading to carriers or if it will only arrive unlocked through the Google Play Store. The latter seems like a distinct possibility and if that’s the case, we fully expect Google to dole out a release date for the Nexus 4. There are rumors that it may launch that day but at this point, it remains uncertain.

Even if the device’s release date is a few weeks away, we still expect Google to announce a release date given the close proximity to the holiday shopping season.

However, if Google also announces a carrier-branded version, and we’ve heard that it might be joining an unlocked version, then don’t expect a release date for that version of the device. Instead, we’ll probably get the old “coming weeks” scenario.

Nexus 7 Announcement (Or Two Or Three)

In addition to the Nexus 4 announcement, we should see Google announce something in regards to the Nexus 7 tablet that it launched earlier this year. With Apple slated to announce an iPad Mini on October 23rd, Google appears ready to be making a move with its own 7-inch tablet.

The company is heavily rumored to be introducing a 32GB Nexus 7 that may take the place of the Nexus 7 16GB’s price point. We aren’t sure yet what’s going to happen to the 16GB model at this point but a 32GB Nexus 7 seems very likely.

Two other Nexus 7 possibilities have emerged as well.

We could see some new Nexus 7 devices arrive later this month.

One, a $99 Nexus 7 with a single-core 800 MHz processor, down from a quad-core processor and a 3G-enabled Nexus 7. Both of these are a little more flimsy than the 32GB Nexus 7 at this point but they do remain possibilities.

At the very least, expect at least one new Nexus 7 at the event.

Android 4.2

The event is an Android event and thus far, we’ve seen some signs that Android 4.2 might be on the way. We aren’t exactly sure what it might entail, other than a new Quick Settings feature which can be seen in the video below, but the software has popped up quite a bit recently and it could be that Google is gearing up to announce its next version of Android.

At this point, we expect Android 4.2 to debut at the event and if it does, look for it to launch with the new Nexus smartphone.

We could see the Nexus Q appear again.

Surprises

Remember at Google I/O when Google announced the Nexus Q? It was a big surprise. And even though the device was sent back to the drawing board, it’s possible that Google might have something up its sleeve for this event that may not come to light until the event itself.

Other Nexus smartphones? A revamped Nexus Q? Or maybe, something else entirely that catches every off guard. That’s the beauty of these events and a reason why you should check back in with us for full coverage on October 29th.
