iOS 6.0.1 on iPhone 5: First Impressions and Performance

Published

on

With my iPhone 3GS retired, it’s time to start a new chapter of analysis today with first impressions of the iOS 6.0.1 update for the iPhone 5 which Apple released to the public a short time ago. While the update itself is far from spectacular, there are some enhancements and bug fixes that not only make this an update worth installing but a fantastic update for iPhone 5 users.

Very quickly, for those unfamiliar, I used to own an iPhone 3GS. And every time that Apple released an update, no matter how small or large, I would give users my thoughts about the update. That will continue with the iPhone 5 which is now my new go-to smartphone and one that was in need of an update from Apple after launching with iOS 6 on board.

iOS 6.0.1 arrived today for the iPhone 5.

For the past month, I have been using iOS 6 with my iPhone 5 and so far, things have been pretty good. I’m enjoying most of the new features especially Do Not Disturb, which I use very consistently, and the new sharing options. Those in particular have stood out to me. All in all, it has been a pretty good experience, but that’s not to say there haven’t have been some hiccups along the way.

Like many others, I experienced a few bugs in iOS 6 that were pretty annoying, especially the Wi-Fi issue and the keyboard bug that went down every single time I went into the App Store and fired up the keyboard.

Fortunately, Apple very swiftly released iOS 6.0.1, an update that it says squashes these issues and after spending a few hours with the software, here are my first impressions of the update for the iPhone 5.

I was checking for updates when lo and behold, I found Apple had released something. But what was it? I was immediately greeted with something called “Updater for iPhone 5” which I at first thought was some kind of joke. Soon after, I realize it was all business. Apparently, there is some kind of bug that doesn’t allow iPhone 5 users to download the update OTA or Over-the-Air.

Boy, That Was Fast…

After downloading this to my iPhone 5, I was then able to install the nearly 70MB update that was and is iOS 6.0.1. Unlike the installation process on the iPhone 3GS, this was an extremely fast ordeal that took no longer than 15 minutes. There were times that the download and install process took three to four times that on my iPhone 3GS, even for smaller updates. So, that was a nice change.

My iPhone 5 rebooted, as iPhones normally do after installing software updates, and I was now running iOS 6.0.1, not a large update by any stretch of the imagination but one that I was hoping would solve my issues.

Wi-FI Issues

Funny that Apple specifically mentions that it fixed issues with Wi-Fi reliability with, specifically, encrypted WPA2 Wi-Fi networks. Because I live in an apartment, this is the type of Wi-Fi network that I use.

Since the release of iOS 6, my Wi-Fi issues had been intermittent. One day, Wi-Fi would be working as normal on my iPhone 5 and other days, I’d look down and I’d mysteriously be running on AT&T’s 4G LTE network. At the beginning I just attributed it to U-Verse issues but soon realized that my Android devices weren’t dropping connections like my iPhone 5.

ios614

There ware also times when my connection was weaker than it should have been. Apple then seemingly acknowledged the issue and said a software fix would take care of the issues and today, so far so good with iOS 6.0.1 and its bold promise.

I’ve got full signal strength and it hasn’t randomly dropped.

Keyboard Fix

Like many other iOS 6 users, I experienced the keyboard glitch where random horizontal lines would be displayed on my keyboard when in the App Store. Unlike the Wi-Fi issues, this was more of an annoyance than an actual issue but it’s still nice to be able to go into the App Store without getting distracted by the glitch.

Pleasant Surprises

A few times, I’ve seen the bug where the flash of my camera would not go off. I didn’t even know it was a bug, I originally thought it was user error, until I saw the changelog today.

I’m also looking forward to what Apple is saying is a fix for the iPhone where it couldn’t connect to cellular networks in some instances. There have been some mornings where I’ll wake up and I’ll only be connected to Wi-Fi for whatever reason. That might be on AT&T’s end, maybe on Apple’s, I’m not sure at this point but so far, service has been stellar today.

Fix Missing?

I haven’t experienced the time and date issue where the iPhone randomly resets the time and date at unannounced times and it’s frustrating not to see a fix listed in the changelog. Sometimes, something small like that might not get listed so it’s possible that Apple did indeed fix it, but because I haven’t experienced the issue, I can’t tell.

Anyone out there still seeing this issue after iOS 6.0.1?

An Issue That Still Bothers Me

An issue that I have been having with my iPhone 5 for the past few weeks, that seems to still occur here with iOS 6.0.1, has to do with group messages sent with iMessage. I get a lot of group chats with friends as I’m sure many of you do as well. Sometimes the process is smooth and I’ll get notified of messages, many of them, on the home screen or lock screen.

Other times, group chats seem to lock up my iPhone 5 to the point where it’s unusable. This still happens in iOS 6.0.1. If I receive a group message, it sometimes doesn’t prompt on the lock screen and worse yet, it locks up my phone to the point where I can’t unlock it. The screen just remains black. Then, after a few minutes, I am able to get in to find a boat load of messages.

I have fiddled with my iMessage settings for awhile and no combination of things seems to work.

Anyone else having this issue with iOS 6?

Who Should and Shouldn’t Install iOS 6.0.1

I recommend this update to iPhone 5 users that aren’t jailbroken. The update only seems to help matters and even if you haven’t noticed these issues, there is a chance that it will make you realize that you were actually experiencing a bug. As for battery life and overall performance, good and snappy as ever.

iPhone 5 owners waiting patiently for an iPhone 5 jailbreak should wait to update to iOS 6.0.1, as there are reports it closed some security holes discussed at the recent HITB conference during a talk on iOS jailbreaking.

I was a loyal android customer…… almost a week ago I bought my 1st iPhone…. iPhone 5. I am already disappointed with the fact that I cant use MY property the way that I was able to with the android OS…. when you pay what one of these items cost you should not have a corporation telling you what you can and cant download and use on YOUR phone…. I have almost 8 days left to return it if I dont like it. I may wait till day 13 and do so…. I was excited to see the jailbreak news but I am confused if I can do this yet or not….

Oh shut up Larry, you already voiced your own opinion, now quit trolling. Im very happy with my iPhone 5 and the apps I’ve invested over the years. I didn’t wait in line and didn’t even preorder early from my cell provider Telus, and still got it the morning of launch day.

Gad you like to throw your money away by smashing things, not the brightest crayon in the box if you ask me…

No one here seems helpful. After the update I am still seeing the Date & Time issue. It has happened to me many many times. Sometimes it’s just AM instead of PM, sometimes it’s just a few minutes off, other times the completely wrong day. I use Verizon, I love the phone, this is an annoying bug. Haven’t found a good reset workaround, I think it’s the auto set feature, haven’t tried leaving it on manual set.

I am having a strange issue w my 5 and its connection to my car Bluetooth. I have explained this to apple, car dealer and car manufacturer but no one has a fix or a decent answer. Here’s the issue- when my phone is paired w my car and a call comes in, the microphone immediately goes to mute. I have to say “hello” 10-15 times before the mic will unmute and I can begin the conversation. Very strange. Didn’t happen w the 4; just the 5.

HEy I just went to apple today about this issue…. Its a hardware issue and some of the phones have it make a genius appointment and they will give you a new phone. My bluetooth wouldn’t connect to anything most of the time.

Michael, I found that disabling LTE fixes the time issue. You can still use 3G, just not the faster network. (This is on my Verizon iPhone 5 32GB.) It’s well-talked about on the Apple forums, and pretty much everyone who tried this fix said it worked for them.

Hopefully the already-beta-testing iOS 6.1 will fix this annoyance.

That said, Android fanboys can take their Galaxy phones and go fiddle. I am constantly amazed that people put up with the absolutely terrible state of the Android interface fragmentation. I can’t go from a Samsung to a Motorola phone and easily configure an Exchange email account for clients because every manufacturer puts stuff in completely different places. Google also won’t license ActiveSync from Microsoft (Apple does), so you have to buy third-party email apps which often don’t work as promised. I’ll stick to a slightly buggy Apple product, thanks.

      11/05/2012 at 12:25 pm

Thank you Joe, I also have the 32gig version. I feel that the issue has seemingly gotten worse in the past few days. I don’t want to turn off LTE, because it’s a big reason I got this thing. The only upsetting part of all this is when my alarm is not going off at the correct times, and iMessage will not send messages if the date & time is incorrect. So the phone knows the time is wrong, but it’s not updating it properly.

I do hope the 6.1 just syncs with Apple’s time servers. Because Verizon obviously has something wrong. A lot of the forums I’ve read have claimed the same issues with LTE Android devices. I just want to see ONE of the two companies say, “yes, we know, we’re working on it…” :)

  8. PhilxLatio

    11/03/2012 at 8:33 am

Apple isn’t going to fix the time and date issue because it’s not Apple’s fault. It’s a carrier issue (mainly Verizon and Sprint who leases from Verizon). SGIII and other 4G LTE phones have reported the same issues. Verizon has to update/upgrade all the towers that are effected with the issue. I had the issue my first two weeks of having the phone and after reporting it to Verizon several times during those two weeks, I haven’t had an issue in the past two weeks with time/date staying synced.

And Larry, that’s a douche move to say that someone died because a product sucks. You may not like a product but to say someone died because it’s terrible is a shitty thing to say. It’s just as bad as someone saying they hope your mom gets asshole cancer.

I’ve only experienced one main issue,I’ve had the same issue with my 3G, 3GS, 4 and now 5. Sometimes (I’d say 1 in every 10 calls) my phones screen will lock up at the end of a call, I can’t do anything until the line disconnects. Then I have to lock the screen with the power button and then unlock it, after I do that it works just fine. I’m not sure if its a problem with AT&T or if other people have this problem. Anyone else have this happen.

I seriously don’t know what everybody’s problem is. My iphone 5 works perfectly. Bluetooth, wifi, maps, and the speed of the phone all working great. I don’t know where you guys are getting your phones from and what you are doing with them, but I think the problem here is the user and not the phone. This Larry guy is a complete f’n asshole and should be shot in the head for what he said. Sick man!!

I don’t understand where you people are getting your phones from. Are you guys buying Myphones from Mexico instead of iPhones from the USA. If you review the iPhone 5 you don’t find many negitive reviews at all. There’s just a bunch of iPhone haters on here. If you don’t like them move along. Go get your Samsung. And for the misinformed people. Steve Jobs left 5 years of blue prints and drawings. He left 5 years of notes and things that had to be done in his company apple.. And if iPhones are so bad. Wouldn’t people have learned. They had the chance 3G,3GS,4g,4gs. But they continue to buy them.? Because they continue to make great products. The sales show it.

          11/18/2012 at 7:19 pm

I’m not racist. You people can keep jumping the fence into the USA. You guys work cheap for my family’s business. But there locking down the border and starting to shoot at you people. And if your so proud then go back

          • Martha

            11/27/2012 at 5:58 pm

That why you stupid Americans keep to hire us and ya we work cheap and out work all you stupid American lazy asses!! Haaaa not our fault, who will pick all your fruits and veggies and work the fields?? Not you lazy Americans!!! That’s why we’re taking over!! And we will keep coming over no matter what you Americans do or try to do!! We always have a plan and one step ahead of you!!

        • Dirty Sanchez

          11/28/2012 at 5:50 am

Yeah you got that right. Yall work for cheap. Y’all will work for free pretty much just to go out and sweat. If there is not any of you people to pick are fruit and veggies as you say. Who will.? Lets see.? The Americans that are responsible and will gladly work 9 to 5. And what’s even more funny is machines are replacing you people. Every time we invest into a new piece of equipment. We get rid of a bunch of you people. And you people can be or think your ahead of whom or whatever. But at the end of the day the goverment is ahead of us all. When ever they want they will easily pull a hitler and wipe you people out. Send your type packing sand. I am just being honest. I am not racist I could care less. The color of an individuals skin does not make them more or less superior to a race different of there own.
