How to Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS & iPod Touch w/ Cydia

Published

on

The iPhone Dev Team was swift in releasing the first iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch.

Just a day after Apple announced iOS 6.0.1, there is a tool to jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 on a number of older devices. This is still a tethered iOS 6.0 jailbreak, so not every user will want to jump on the jailbreak process.

While iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S owners wait for an iOS 6 jailbreak, and should hold off on updating to iOS 6.0.1 to be safe, owners of select devices can jailbreak today.

Read: iPhone 5 Jailbreak Sites Promise the Impossible for $25

The process is very similar to the iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4th generation, so previous users don’t need to worry much about the process changing.

Before starting, it’s worth reading 5 reasons to jailbreak the iPhone and a collection of reasons not to jailbreak. The iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak is legal, but it can void the device’s warranty. In most cases it is easy to un-jailbreak the iPhone before taking it in for service.

How to Jailbreak the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS & iPod Touch

1.  Backup the iPhone or iPod and upgrade to iOS 6.0.1 and that the computer is running the latest version of iTunes.

2. Download a recent version of Redsn0w. For the iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak, users need Redsn0w 0.9.15b1,  Redsn0w 0.9.15b2 or  Redsn0w 0.9.15b3.

  • Users that need to download a new version should download Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 for Mac or Windows

3. Extract Redsn0w to the desktop.

4. Open the redsn0w application.

  • Ctrl Click on Mac (if on Mountain Lion)
  • Right click and Run as Administrator on Windows.
iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak
5. Connect the iPhone and click on Extras.
  1. Click on Custom IPSW and find the iOS 6 file downloaded in step 1.
  2. Click on the iPSW.
  3. After Redsn0w recognizes the file, click back.

6. On the main screen, click on Jailbreak.

7. Place the device into DFU mode, as shown in the video below and the on-screen instructions.

8. Follow the on-screen instructions to jailbreak the iPhone 4 and install Cydia.

iPhone 4 jailbreak guide

Click Just boot to complete the iOS 6 jailbreak.

9. Click on Just boot.

  • In the future, to restart, connect the iPhone to the computer, open Redsn0w, click Extras and Just Boot.

Now the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 4th generation is jailbroken and Cydia should be on the home screen, offering access to iOS 6 jailbreak tweaks and apps. Two good places to start looking ar GottaBeMobile’s 5 hidden Cydia Gems and Top 5 Cydia Apps.

For now there is no untethered iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch. There is also no iPhone 5 jailbreak or iPhone 4s jailbreak, though the hacking teams are working on both.

Stay tuned for the latest jailbreak news.

You have to use 6.0 ipsw even if your software is 6.0.1

It doesn’t work. Maybe it used to but not anymore. I’m on 6.0.1 and 3GS. Whether I boot normally or using Just Boot my iphone doesn’t seem jailbroken because all I get is select the language, the wireless network I want to connect to and then I get Invalid Sim Card. And yes, I used 6.0 IPSW. This probably only works if you have 6.0 blobs, which I don’t. I only have 4.1 blobs and so all I could do is downgrade to 4.1…unfortunately most apps require at least firmware 4.3 and I haven’t found any article that can upgrade, or downgrade, to a firmware that you or cydia doesn’t have blobs for.

This does not work on iPhone 4 CDMA either. I’m experienced with jail-breaking and after I use the ‘Just Boot’ in the final step iOS starts with no Cydia. I have tried different methods and it appears that this process everyone claims to work does not. I need RedSn0w to support iOS 6.0.1 ASAP. Everything I do just boots the phone as if I restarted unteathered. Why does this work on some iPhone 4’s and not others? The 6.0 jailbreak was so easy!

Same problem for me. I’m using the 6.0 ipsw and the ‘just boot’ doesn’t load the pinapple… i just see my regular apple logo, boots up and NO email, safari etc.

        • max

          11/28/2012 at 4:40 pm

Ok, i see the problem. You need to make sure you select the ipsw again when you do the ‘just boot’ …then the pinapple shows up :D

You should start over the process, and make sure that every step of the way you choose your IPSW at every step. If the exploit still doesn’t process I would re-download the IPSW

hey there , i tried to downgrade my firmware from ios 6 to ios 5.1.1 but it didn’t work out for me. i tried to create a custom ipsw in redsnow , and when i tried to restore my iphone to 5.1.1 (a custom ipsw ) , it sent my iphone into recovery mode just when the whole process was about to finish :( . Can you please help

    • Philippe Vezina

      11/03/2012 at 9:12 pm

I tried downgrading ios 6.0.1 down to 6.0 and then I got stuck on recovery mode too. There is only one solution that I found:
Go in My Computer, The drive (mostly C:), Windows, System 32, drivers, etc and open hosts using NotePad. Copy all the lines that have the word gs.apple or any other line with apple in it. Then paste them in a Word document but don’t close it. Then erase the those lines in the hosts file, save the file and close it. Close iTunes and reopen it if it was open. Restore it ( will wo’t be able to downrade, you’ll have to use the current iOS). After the restore reopen the hosts file and put the apple lines back in the file, save it and you’re done.

    • DaveyWavey

      11/05/2012 at 6:50 pm

You cannot downgrade to 5.1.1 unless you have your blobs backed up. If you didnt do a firmware backup on your device than dont even waste your time.

    11/02/2012 at 10:14 pm

I just spent 13 hours doing this on a 2009 3GS. The problem was the order of the procedure and setting the Base Band (BB) to 06.15.00. Warning: You have to make sure the BB is 06.15.00 (or another compatible BB listed on redmondpie.com) and not higher otherwise, you’re screwed.
    1. Upgrade to 6.0.1 via iTunes UNLESS you have 3GS made after week 28 of 2011 or an 8GB 3GS. There are many articles written about why this will brick your phone so feel free to Google those for an explanation.
    2. Get Redsn0w version 0.9.15b3
    3. Download iPhone2,1_6.0_10A403_Restore.ipsw
    4. Follow the jailbreak procedure here: https://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-ios-6.0.1-on-pre-a5-iphone-and-ipod-touch-using-redsn0w/
    5. Don’t do the “Just Boot” thing yet (this is where I kept getting the missing keys bullshit)
    6. Jailbreak the phone again using the same procedure listed before, but uncheck the “install Cydia” box and check the “install iPad Base Band” box and say you’re sure. AGAIN, verify this is what you want to do! If you have a late model 3GS or an 8GB 3GS, DO NOT TRY THIS! IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!
    7. Do not try to “Just Boot” the phone yet.
    8. After the 2nd jailbreak, your phone will be on. Go into the Cydia app and install Ultrasn0w. There are plenty of articles written on this.
    9. Go into Cydia app again and install Untrasn0w Fixer 6.0 NOT 6.0.1!
Note: If you’re planning on using the iphone with T-Mobile, you need to turn off 3G in the settings on the phone. This goes for any network without 3G service.
    10. Go back into Redsn0w and follow the “Just Boot” procedure.
    11. The iPhone should reboot with a pwnapple logo.
    12. Ta-Da!

Lastly, try to not turn your phone off. This is a tethered jailbreak so if you turn your phone off, you will need to boot up the phone via Redsn0w to get the jailbroken functionality again. I also repaired disk permissions a few times in conjunction with this jailbreak. I don’t know if that helped, but it didn’t hurt.

dude i had this missing key.plist problem i used my head and thought:
redsnow 0.9.13dev4 deals with the ios 6 the same as the beta 4 so i used the method of installing cydia with redsnow by following instructions link https://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-ios-6-iphone-and-ipod-touch-a4-based-only-using-redsn0w-tutorial/
and it surprisingly worked on ios 6.0.1.
just give it a try and you will get cydia

      11/05/2012 at 7:09 pm

Tried this and it didnt work. Cydia was still missing. But luckily I never got the missing ipsw error though.

My friend, You dont need to select ios 6.0.1, but you have to select ios 6 even though you wanna jailbreak 6.0.1, since this redsn0w version officially does not support iOS 6.0.1 yet, so for whoeva the problem pertains, you should try selecting ios6 by “select ipsw” option, and you shall get your jailbreak! :)

    Hi all!

In case it helps anyone, I was missing the Cydia after installing the jailbreak and on just boot I was getting the ‘missing keys’ error.

I fixed it by following the steps below:

    1. Jailbreaking by following the steps here: https://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-ios-6-iphone-and-ipod-touch-a4-based-only-using-redsn0w-tutorial/
    2. After jailbreaking – still no Cydia :( BUT go back to your “Extras” screen.
    3. Choose your IPSW for IOS 6 again from the “Select IPSW” menu.
    4. THEN follow the on screen instructions for “Just Boot”.
    5. Hello Cydia. ;)

This is pretty much what “DiegoAlbanez” said above – but with steps.

I think choose the IPSW everytime you boot.

It worked perfectly for me. Thanks very much DiegoAlbanez. :D

    Good luck everyone else!

    Hey guys,
Its been explained above already, but i understand how thesethings are(the thought of bricking your iphone/ipod is scaary). Anyway, youre gonna have both 6.01 and 6.0. the first will give you the plist error, then go back, but this time, select the 6.0 ipsw and all should run smooth. Iv done this on my 3GS and am currently on ios 6.01 with cydia intact…..now im off to unlock it. #fingersCrossed

This is supposed to work for 3GS too. Unfortunately your instructions, just like all the others I’ve tried, don’t work. After jailbreaking, I select 6.0 IPSW and then Just Boot. I always get something like Invalid Sim Card. So when it boots all I can do is select the language, connect to my wireless and I believe the next step is when I get that message. It’s as if I didn’t use Just Boot, even though I did. Maybe this used to work but not anymore.

    Hello all,

Apologies if this sounds all too familiar, but I’m new to the iphone world and made my first attempt at following the above instructions.

I have an iphone 4, with IOS 6. I followed step 1 and downloaded iPhone3,1_6.0_10A403_Restore. (is this the correct file. and do i need this to jailbrak) I then downloaded redsn0w_win_0.915b3.

I then did Extras> Select IPSW > located the above file, selected it, and clicked > OK. A process then ran. (no idea what was happening here).

As instructed, I then went back, and began the jailbreak process. A lot of script and text appeared on the iphone, and insallation occurred.

I then went back to ‘just boot’, and during the process I received a message about missing keys.

Safari and mail now do not load properly, and there is no Cydia app on the phone. Having read the posts above, it sounds as though I need to complete the Boot process to finish. But how is this done considering the missing keys message?

does this work on 6.01 (the latest version of the update) and what exactly does ‘Tethered’ and ‘untethered’ mean?

      11/16/2012 at 10:08 pm

Not 100% sure but this is what I understand the difference is. With untethered if your phone turns off or if it runs out of battery then you lose the jailbreak. You need to jail break it every time the phone goes off. Teathered is the opposite, lol. I guess you can power off the phone and don’t worry about losing the jailbreak. Someone can chime in if I’m mistaken.

I did the entire process as explained. All went fine. Cydia was installed but won’t open. I click on icon it opens then shuts down automatically “/

OK re-did the process and it works. Apparently my son downloaded something and it had to reboot the phone. So when it came back on Cydia wasn’t functioning. Reconnected the phone and processed through redsn0w and it worked. Phone is jail broken.

I wouldn’t jailbreak my phone until there is a stable jailbreak available.
Clearly this is not very promising.
I wouldn’t trust it at all.

      12/12/2012 at 4:56 am

it’s 6.0.1 and yes it’s working. Just be sure you have both 6.0 and 6.0.1 firmware downloaded to your desktop before you start the process.
If you have an old baseband when you select from extras the custom firmware it will ask you if you want to update your firware without having the baseband modified and click yes.(requires the latest redsn0w). Then your phone will stuck in recovery mode if you click on recovery fix you will get an error that some file is missing then on the select IPSW select the 6.0 firmware and head to jailbreak and proceede as usual. After the jailbreak is done your phone will work on 6.0.1 without having to put iPad baseband on it.

If you require unlock then open cydia and install ultrasn0w and then ultrasn0w fixer (you will find info on google how to get the ultrasn0w fixer into cydia) then just restart your phone and you’re done.

Every time i load the ipsw it says does not work for redsn0w and i downloaded the one it told me to in the guide. and does it have to be iPhone2,1_6.0_10A403_Restore.ipsw cause the one in the guide is different?

    12/16/2012 at 5:24 pm

    works
problem fix is unplug your cable then close redsn0w
reopen redsn0w, plug in cable and rerun process. took a few trys but works.
jailbreak for 6.0.1 works also but for some reason cydia shows delayed but eventually it will appear without tethered boot and opens.
problem when trying to reboot errors pop up or no pineapple. just unplug, close and start over make sure you select firmware also or you will get build error

For all iPhone 4 CDMA owners …

Try building a custom firmware to Jail Break the device

    1. Download Snow Breeze 2.9.7
    2. Open it, Click the arrow and then Browse for ios 6.0.1 ipsw file
    3. Click the arrow again and then select General
    4. Finally, Press Build IPSW

    5. Your custom ipsw would be on your desktop
    6. Follow the instructions of snow breeze to put the device into PWNED DFU mode
    7. Open iTunes, Press “SHIFT” and then select “Restore”
    8. That’s all folks :)

CYDIA would be there on the springboard … It worked for me and hopefully would also work for you guys.

    Best of Luck :)

My software I downloaded 3,1_6.0.1_10A523_Restore will not copy to my desktop. It asked if I want to copy without encryption. It doesn’t show up as the file I need it to when I (select IPSW). Any suggestions…I’m using windows.
