The 2012 Elections are here, and users looking for a sample ballot on their iPhone or Android devices are in luck.

Many county election boards offer sample 2012 election ballots online as a PDF that users can download and study, or dedicated election apps that offer sample ballots and polling place lookup on the iPhone or Android devices.

Studying a sample ballot before heading in to a local polling place on election day 2012 speeds up the voting process and cuts the wait for everyone else in line.

Searching the iPhone App Store or Android App Store for local voting apps is as frustrating as waiting in line on November 6th. Users can search their local board of elections for links to apps and sample ballots.

On the iPhone or Android device go to Google and search for your county board of elections, for example Alameda County Board of Elections, Hancock County Board of Elections or Santa Clara County board of elections. Just insert your county in the search box.

Some counties offer apps that let users identify their polling place and precinct to find out what issues they will vote on this year. The sample ballots include local issues like income tax, school levies and whether or not a store can sell liquor on a Sunday.  Other counties only offer the information online.

The Santa Clara County board of elections offers an iPhone voting app and an Android voting app that lets users perform the following tasks on iPhone or Android.

  • Find your assigned polling place (with driving directions)
  • Read your Voter Guide, with information on measures and candidates
  • View a sample of your ballot
  • Check if you are registered to vote
  • Track your Vote by Mail ballot to make sure it counts
  • Look up your districts and elected officials
  • Contact the Registrar of Voters with questions about elections and voting

Other counties like Alameda, in California, only offer an iPhone app. For smaller counties, the information may only be available online, but in most cases the sites format nicely for mobile.

Users who live in areas without sample ballot apps for the iPhone or Android should be able to download a sample ballot for the 2012 election to the iPhone or Android.

In Hancock County in Ohio, residents can download a PDF of a sample 2012 ballot for their precinct with all national, state and local issues and elections. Users can save the PDF to iBooks or to the SD card of an Android phone for reference.

Most of these sample ballots do not provide a lot of context about issues, so users will need to search online for more information or look at the full text of ballot issues, which is usually found on the county board of elections Website as well.
