HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update Planned, Says HTC

Published

on

The HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update, once thought to be rolling out by the end of August, will soon be entering the fourth month since its delay. And while there is still no release date in sight, HTC is still informing customers that the HTC ThunderBolt Android 4.0 update will be rolling out. It just won’t say when.

In a statement provided to Gotta Be Mobile by a reader, an HTC representative goes into detail regarding the missing HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update saying that while it will still be rolling out, a specific time for the roll out is unknown.

The response is similar to ones that we’ve already seen HTC reps deliver to frustrated HTC ThunderBolt owners but nonetheless it’s a good sign that representatives are still informing customers that the update is still slated to roll out.

The HTC ThunderBolt update is still planned it seems.

Here is the full the full contents of the message that he received in regards to the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC ThunderBolt.

Dear [Redacted],

Thank you for taking the time from your busy day to email HTC Technical Support. It is my understanding that you wish to know if your Thunderbolt will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich.

[Redacted] it is my pleasure to share the information that is available to me. Your Thunderbolt will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich. If your next question is when, then I can not give you an exact timeframe.

Please allow me to explain why. HTC no longer announces dates for release of software due to the nature of the software development process. The reason why, is that at any point in the software development cycle a situation may be encountered that requires anything from some minor additional rework, to complete rewrites of the software base.

Only after the final acceptance testing has been successfully completed will HTC release software. The normal time period between the final acceptance testing and release of software is about a week and often shorter than that.

Please do not think that we do not value you as a customer as this is not the case. I do apologize if that is the impression that was put across. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

Please remember that we are here to support you, [Redacted]. You can reach us between 6am to 1am EDST, 7 days a week for your convenience. If you prefer to call us our phone number is
1-866-449-8358.

You can find your online manual as well as software updates at https://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-thunderbolt-verizon/.

Again, my apologies that you were left with a feeling of neglect.

The HTC ThunderBolt ICS update has been missing since August and since then neither HTC nor Verizon have supplied owners with any details in regards to the software’s roll out date, leaving it in limbo.

HTC recently took to Twitter to address the Droid Incredible 2 ICS update which it said was experiencing connectivity issues. Thus far though, the response above is about as candid as we’ve seen from HTC in regards to the ThunderBolt update.

Thanks, C!

Too little too late. I’m due for an upgrade in 50 days, and I’m counting the minutes until I can get rid of my first and last HTC phone ever.

Ditto, except I’m not due until mid March. Same deal, though. Definitely no more HTC. Probably no more Android. I’m going to look at Windows Mobile 8.

Thanks GBM for another thunderbolt article that says nothing. Stop reporting on how HTC still doesn’t know and quit posting poorly crafted ‘insider’ info. It makes you sound desperate for hits.

Yeah, RIGHT! I got an email response to my rant and HTC informed me that the ICS upgrade would come around Thanksgiving. Just more HTC BS. They deserve to fail.

Thanksgiving? Guess they missed that by a week already. Or maybe they meant Taiwan Thanksgiving? When is that?

The facade of HTC is starting to show cracks and won’t be long before it all comes crumbling down.

What’s REALLY funny to read about is that the new Windows phone is made by HTC and guess what problem they have encountered? Random re-boots! HA! That’s the same problem the Thunderbolt had when it was frist introduced. The HTC idiots can’t get anything right. Time to find a phone maker that employs professionals; you know, college graduates.

My wife and I each hand an HTC Incredible, HTC Thunderbolt, and after such a long delay purchased Motorola Razr Maxx HD. I will NEVER buy an HTC product again!!!!!!!!! The lack of timely on going support for their android products is HORRIBLE!!!! Hopefully with Google owning Motorola Mobile they will push to have better long term support.

HTC you have left your customers in the dust and that is why you are now finanically struggling!

Its not HTC its acutally Verizon not releasing it.If you recall HTC Leaked the ics update a while back but took it back.Verizion doesnt wanna release because Like myself im sure most of us HTC thunderbolt users have unlimited data plans which is what vzw got rid of.so they want us to “upgrade” our phones so they can change our unlimited data plan. However HTC isnt totally off the hook they should have been working on the update not waiting and making new products. But vzw is to really blame here.

    • Travis

      12/04/2012 at 1:10 pm

Because you upgrade you phone with VZw does NOT change your data plans. BUT, in June I will be upgrading from HTC to a different manufacturer, NO MORE HTC for me!!

This is the message they gave me last week:
    Dear Kenjie Iglesia,

Thank you for contacting the HTC Technical Support Team.

Due to the nature of the software development cycle, we may encounter the need to make some changes to ensure everything will work flawlessly, which is why we no longer engage to announce release dates. ICS? Who cares at this point. I have friends who already have Jelly Bean’s second update and I’m sure Android will come out with Key Lime Pie early next year. I’m tired of begging for an update that is already outdated. Battery life still sucks on the TB, too. I’m just counting down the days until Galaxy S4 is released. No use trying to revive this dinosaur.

Why would you want an update with a discontnued phone anyway? Even if you people do get an update it will be sluggish and will definetly kill the already terrible battery life. I I moved on to the Droid M. I can’t kill the battery life how much I try. It also has Jellybean on it.

I’m so tired of waiting for this update while I wait for my upgrade. ICS is above and beyond better than 2.3. I really hope it’s sometime soon and not 6 months down the road when I can actually get my upgrade. Worst part is that I have no idea what I should even upgrade to because I’m terrified of having the same piss quality battery life or update cycle. Ugh.

I understand that there r issues in uodating the thunderbolt fine. Release the new thunderbolt with aall the bells and whistles and call it a day. Give a discount to existing thunderbolt owners problem solved. I do not see why this is that complicated?!

Agree, can’t wait for my days at HTC is over. I’ve had “smart phones” since they first started coming out by Samsung, Motorola, and LG HTC has by far been the worse! As soon as possible going back to Samsung. HTC has done nothing but lie & give the runaround from day one. The only reason I bought the “not the next dream phone, the one that” (thunderbolt) is because I was told it was HTC flagship phone & would be kept updated for at least two years & that ICS would be out within a few months. Now I’m stuck with a phone that I can’t use unless its attached to the charger. It drops data, & reboots itself at least two to three times a day. And of course no ICS. Verizon should replace all thunderbolts for upgrade price no matter how long you’ve owned it. But I won’t hold my breath waiting for that, it’d be like waiting for HTC to start giving a damn about its customers.

I just called HTC and was told NO IT WILL NOT BE GETTING ICS..

  19. Retz

    12/17/2012 at 4:02 pm

Unofficially I spoke to a Verizon tech support about this issue briefly. They have never seen anything about an ICS update for the thunderbolt and most likely will not ever as the phone is almost 2 years old and they obviously don’t sell the phone anymore. Either way my upgrade is in 2 months and it wouldn’t be worth it anyway. I’m simply going back to Samsung as they obviously seem to be far more advanced than most other companies. Never going to touch an HTC again.
