Nexus 4 Sales Push Backorder Times into Months

Published

on

Google’s shipping times for the 16GB Nexus 4 are getting progressively worse with shipping times now sitting at a dreadful 6-7 weeks while the 8GB Nexus 4 still toils at 8-9 weeks.

After the Nexus 4 went on sale earlier this week, the device sold out almost immediately, leaving consumers staring lengthy shipping times right in the face. Those shipping times, over the past few days, have gotten worse than they were on the day the Nexus 4 went back up for sale, and now are firmly set into the next year.

If Google’s shipping times are accurate, then the 16GB Nexus 4 won’t ship out to those who order for at least a month and a half while those interested in picking up the 8GB today will unfortunately be looking at a shipping time of up to two months or more. That means that 8GB Nexus 4 orders placed today could arrive in late January or worse.

The soonest anyone ordering the Nexus 4 today will see the device is six weeks from now it seems.

It could also be that these shipping times keep getting worse as the holiday shopping season picks up. And with no where else to order these devices in the United States, expect on-contract through T-Mobile, that remains a distinct possibility.

This is not the first time that Google has dealt with a Nexus 4 shipping problem. When the device went on sale earlier this month, it sold out in just a short time after it went on sale and those who didn’t place an order were left with either a backorder or wondering when Google might replenish stock.

The company replenished stock earlier this week though the results were the same. The Nexus 4 was sold out within minutes of going on sale and since then, shipping times have gone from bad to worse, leaving many wondering whether or not their device will show up in 2012 or 2013.

The Nexus 4’s sell out has prompted online auction sites like eBay to place restrictions on the Nexus 4 in order to stymie any abuse that might occur on the site due to the overwhelming demand for Google’s new device.

Restrictions on the Nexus 4 include:

  • Authorized resellers will be allowed to list an unlimited number of items per week.
  • eBay Top Rated Sellers will be allowed to list up to 8 items per week.
  • All sellers meeting minimum performance standards will be allowed to list 4 items per week.
  • New sellers who’ve confirmed their personal information may list 1 item per week.

The Nexus 4 is currently listed on eBay but many of those are being sold for well over the $299 and $349 prices that Google is charging for the models on its Google Play Store. Until Google gets the device back into stock though, this may be a route that many consumers have to consider.
