Nokia Denies Wandering Eye Towards Android

Published

on

Towards the end of last week, speculations that Nokia may once again be warming up to Android surfaced as a result of a LinkedIn job posting, however the company has turned to Twitter to deny such rumors. In the past, Nokia’s executives have reiterated numerous times that it was fully committed to Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, and it looks like things were blown out of proportion again with the latest gossip that Nokia may be abandoning its platform partner.

Nokia’s LinkedIn Job Posting

nokia-logo-largeRumors of Nokia going Android resurced as a result of Nokia’s LinkedIn job listing seeking a software engineer in Sunnyvale, California to “oversee the development of embedded Linux device software and hardware drivers for our exciting new products.” Considering that Google’s Android operating system is based on Linux, there were some prematurely renewed hopes that Nokia may be opening up its award-winning smartphone hardware designs to the possibility of running Google’s Android OS.

Since numerous blogs have picked up on the job posting, the listing has been taken down.

Nokia’s Explanation: HERE Maps

According to Nokia, the job listing was for a person to help Nokia’s location services in bringing the recently launched HERE Maps to iOS and Android. According to Doug Dawson of Nokia, “Our recently posted job is linked to our HERE Maps support for other platforms, including iOS and Android.” Dawson says that there is “nothing more” to be read into the job posting.

Other Linux Efforts

Aside from bringing HERE Maps to Linux-based iOS and Android platforms, Nokia still has other Linux efforts. One of those efforts is the MeeGo platform, which debuted as an ‘experimental project’ with the Nokia N9 hardware. While Nokia has shelved MeeGo development in favor of going with Windows Phone, the company does have Linux projects brewing at home.
