Evolution of Android Illustration Hints at Key Lime Pie

With Google naming its successive major releases of the mobile Android operating system with alphabetical names with a dessert base, an illustration created by Manu Cornet, who is a Google employee, may seemingly hint that the next edition of Android, which will begin with the letter K, may be called Key Lime Pie.

The first named version of Android was Android 1.5, and that OS was commonly referred to as Cupcake. Google released Android 1.6 to follow, called Donut, and Android 2.0 and Android 2.1 were both referred to as Eclair. Froyo was the common name of Android 2.2, which was followed by Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Taking a break from smartphones, Android 3.0 was tablet-only and was called Honeycomb. In an effort to unify phones and tablets, Google created Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. And Android 4.1 and Android 4.2 followed, with both having the common Jelly Bean name.

Initially, it was believed that Android 4.2 would be called Key Lime Pie, but that turned out to not be the case.

It’s unclear if Android Key Lime Pie will continue the Android 4.x lineage or if the OS will be major enough to jump to Android 5.0.

The illustration posted on Phandroid shows the evolution of Android version numbers through history, but does not detail what potential new features that Android will feature with Key Lime Pie. One thing is for sure, Key Lime Pie will likely usher in a whole new era of new Nexus devices.
