Nexus 4 Launch Takes Another Bizarre Turn

Published

Yesterday, the T-Mobile Nexus 4 was completely sold out, leaving potential customers without a way to pick up the T-Mobile-attached version of the Nexus 4. Now, the device has once again come back into stock though there is a bit of a bizarre twist attached to it.

Previously, when the T-Mobile Nexus 4 was up for sale, it was up for sale for $199.99 on-contract. That is the price that had been available for since the middle of November. Now, it has returned to T-Mobile’s online store with a much different price then the one that originally had. T-Mobile’s website is now showing the device as available for $399.99 on-contract, much more expensive than $199.99.

The Nexus 4 has returned to T-Mobile for $399.99 it seems.

Those who are trying to upgrade will see that the device can be purchased for $199.99 though those who are new customers are shown a $399.99 price tag all the way up until the final step before purchase. So, at this point, it’s unclear if it’s a typo or if the price of the Nexus 4 has actually changed. T-Mobile has yet to clarify anything for customers looking to snag the phone.

Even if it is a mistake, it’s yet another bizarre twist in a launch of a phone that has been filled with plenty. It began with the unlocked Nexus 4’s release date where Google’s site crumbled under the load of customers trying to purchase the phone. The site spit out a ton of errors and the phone was soon switching between being available and being sold out. Some customers who were able to order received backorder notices.

A few weeks later, after backordered devices rolled out, the phone went up for sale again and once again the launch was marred by site error’s and uncertainty. The Nexus 4 also sold out in mere minutes once again yet this time, Google continued to take orders. Shipping times for the 8GB Nexus 4 were pushed to the nine to ten week mark at whcih point the device was listed as sold out. Google has yet to say when the device will come back into stock.

The 16GB Nexus 4 shipping times remain at five to six weeks. That sell out has left T-Mobile and auction sites like eBay as the only places to pick up a phone in a relatively swift manner. Only now, T-Mobile’s website is as confusing as Google’s website has been in the past.

Hopefully, T-Mobile sorts this out and returns the Nexus 4 to its original price but at this point, it’s unclear if that will happen.

Very strange as the T-Mobile on contract price would be higher than the Nexus 4 unlocked price. Has the value of a Nexus 4 appreciated since release? I enjoy my 16 GB Nexus 4, but $399 on contract would be a no-go if I was in the market still!
