After long last, the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Ice Cream Sandwich update is finally available though those who wish to get their hands on it will need to snag it through Samsung’s Kies application.

The Android 4.0 software update for the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has become available through the Samsung Kies application which forces device owners to download and install the software by using their computer. The process, on paper, is pretty straight foward. Plug the device into the computer through a USB connection, make sure the latest version of Samsung Kies is up and running, and let the software run.

The AT&T Galaxy Tab 8.9 ICS update has rolled out.

Soon, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Ice Cream Sandwich update should be up and running which will be a big improvement over Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Those who need some further assistance will want to head to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 page which offers all the instructions one will need to get the software up and running.

As we saw with the AT&T Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update, Samsung Kies often isn’t the most reliable way of installing Android software but unfortunately in this case, users of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 have no choice as Samsung says it will be through Samsung Kies only. That means that the update will not be rolling out Over-the-Air so owners should not be wasting time looking for it.

Those who don’t wish to go through Kies can also find it at SamFirmware, available for download.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is going to bring an overhauled version of the Android UI, improved Notifications and re-sizable widgets, more lock screen functionality, improved functionality for spell check and typing, as well as a new Favorites tray and home screen folders. Again, it’s a huge upgrade over the previous operating system which means that owners of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 for AT&T will want to download and install this as soon as they get the chance.

This is great and all, but what happens when you have done everything to try and make kies recognize your device, and it still won’t?

Recognized my device but tells me it’s not compatible with kids for update. Did download new version before trying 12-12-2012 and reinstalled device drivers.

Living in Indonesia I already prepared myself to be patient till another month (my GS2 waited almost 2 months after the official roll out). But out of curiosity I connected to KIES just a couple of hours ago and…it was there! I’m very much impressed with the overhaul. Thank Samsung for keeping their promise. Hopefully JB will follow soon :-)

Good news. I use AT&T’s 4G LTE here in Atlanta extensively on my GTab, and I have found it to be one of the best features of the tablet. On top of incredible data speeds, this tablet is perfect for graphic design work.
