Ultimate Android 4.2 Update List: Which Phones Will Get the New Jelly Bean?

Published

on

Back in November, Google started rolling out its latest software update for its mobile devices, an update that is called Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Android 4.2 replaces Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the company’s most current mobile operating system.

Android 4.2 brings quite a bit of new along with it despite it being an incremental upgrade. Included with the new update is a new handy Quick Settings function, lock screen widgets, more Google Now functionality, Photo Sphere, a new screensaver called Daydream, and a new gesture-enhanced stock keyboard that is reminiscent of third party keyboards like Swype.

Again, it’s not as major as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or the upcoming Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie update, but it does bring some likable features to the table for owners of Android-powered smartphones.

panorama1

Photo Sphere is one of the big Android 4.2 Jelly Bean features.

Unfortunately, like all Android updates, release dates and roll out timing for most phones are unclear at this point leaving many Android smartphone users wondering if and when Android 4.2 Jelly Bean might arrive for their device.

Here, we want to bring you everything that we know in terms of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean roll outs for Android smartphones. Details at this point are quite scarce but there are already some devices that have the update and others that we think will definitely be getting a taste of Android 4.2. There are also some devices that, at this point, we can probably rule out.

We’ll do our best to speculate about which phones may or may not get the upgrade and we’ll also add in confirmations when they are announced. That being said, be sure to bookmark this page for reference as it will take awhile before all of the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update roll out information becomes clear.

HTC Amaze 4G

amaze4g

The HTC Amaze 4G is currently running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and with no Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in sight, it could be that the Amaze 4G either is left on Android 4.0 or hopefully, Android 4.1. Noted tipster Football4PDA seems to think that an Amaze 4G Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is extremely unlikely, so at the moment, the chances of a roll out look grim.

HTC Droid Incredible 2

incredible2

The Droid Incredible 2 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update is still in limbo and that should pretty much tell owners of the aging device that an upgrade to not only Android 4.2 Jelly Bean but to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is highly unlikely. We’ll never say never because there is always a possible miracle waiting in the wings but at this point, an upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean seems highly unlikely for Droid Incredible 2 owners.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

incredible4glte

The Droid Incredible 4G LTE still remains on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich though an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly has seemingly been confirmed. And given how new this device is, it was released only a few short months ago, an upgrade to Android 4.2 doesn’t seem to be out of the question. Just when it might arrive though remains another story and seeing as how there is no release date for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in sight, it could be a long while before Droid Incredible 4G LTE owners see the update.

HTC EVO 3D

evo3d

Like the Amaze 4G, the HTC EVO 3D Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is in doubt which means that a roll out of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is looking unlikely. More likely is that the EVO 3D stays on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which means that owners could miss out on all of the fantastic features that Google’s latest operating systems bring to the table.

HTC EVO 4G LTE

evolte

The HTC EVO 4G LTE, one of the original 4G LTE devices for Sprint’s network, will almost assuredly be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and that leaves the window open for an upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Sprint hasn’t confirmed anything yet and given that it doesn’t have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean yet doesn’t bode well for a release in the near future.

HTC Droid DNA

droiddna

Verizon’s Droid DNA, the first smartphone to launch in the U.S. with a 1080p display, launched with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box. It was one of the first phones to do that as well. That being said, that should mean that Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is extremely likely for the Droid DNA. So now, it’s just a matter of when it might be released. Given that the device is on Verizon, it could be a matter of months before the Droid DNA sees Android 4.2 released.

HTC One S

htcones

T-Mobile’s HTC One S should be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at some point in the near future, its first major Android update, and that is a good sign for those that are looking forward to the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. Again, it doesn’t confirm anything, but given that it has only received one major update as it launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich means that it still has some life ahead of it yet.

HTC One X

onex

The HTC One X remains one of HTC’s flagship devices and it started to recently get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. And though it hasn’t arrived for the AT&T model yet, it likely will in the near future. Like the HTC One S, that is a potential sign of good things to come. It would be surprising to see the device get only one major Android update so Android 4.2 is likely in the cards. When though, is a different matter entirely.

HTC One X+

onexplus

The HTC One X+ for AT&T ships with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean which should mean that it will be getting Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and all of its features at some point down the road. However, given that AT&T has taken so long with the HTC One X Jelly Bean update, owners of this new model shouldn’t expect it to be hovering just above the horizon. Instead, look for it to roll out several months into 2013 at the very earliest.

HTC Rezound

rezound

HTC Rezound owners should not be worried about Android 4.2 Jelly Bean right now because it looks like Android 4.1 Jelly Bean itself might be in doubt. Rumor has it, Verizon won’t be pushing Android 4.1 to the HTC Rezound which would spell doom for the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update. HTC and Verizon have remained mum on the subject so its all just whispering at this point but don’t be surprised if the Rezound is left on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

HTC Sensation 4G

sensation

The HTC Sensation 4G for T-Mobile was outfitted with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this year but thus far, we haven’t seen anything positive about an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. Instead, the news has been negative with rumors stating that the device will not get upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at all. If true, that will likely mean that Android 4.2 is out of the question.

HTC ThunderBolt

tbolt

For months, the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update has toiled in limbo for months now and because of that uncertainty, an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is likely in doubt and to be honest, very unlikely. That being said, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is more than likely never going to roll out for Verizon’s very first 4G LTE smartphone which rolled out all the way back in 2011.

LG Lucid

lglucid

The LG Lucid was upgraded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this year but thus far, LG has not revealed any plans for a Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. So, it’s unclear if the LG Lucid is in the plans for an upgrade for Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. If Android 4.1 Jelly Bean makes it to the Lucid, there is an outside chance, but owners should not be getting their hopes up. If it does arrive, don’t expect it for quite awhile.

LG G2X

g2x

The LG G2X, one of the first dual-core phones in the U.S., is still sitting on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It should be getting the boost up to Android 4.0 ICS at some point in the future given that its foreign brother, the Optimus 2X was bumped up to Android 4.0, but Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and thus, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean seem rather unlikely at this point.

LG Nexus 4

nexus4

One phone that needn’t worry about the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is the LG Nexus 4, Google’s latest Nexus device, which runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box. That should mean that it is primed and ready for whatever Google has in store next which should be Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, an operating system that should be announced at Google I/O in May.

LG Optimus G

optimusg

The LG Optimus G, one of LG’s best U.S. smartphones in years, was released with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will be getting the upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at some point in the future, likely in 2013. While that’s not a guarantee for Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, it should mean that LG’s device will definitely be in the running to get Google’s latest Android update.

Motorola Atrix 2

atrix2

The show is over for the Motorola Atrix 2 which will be left on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich instead of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Motorola made the news official a short time ago and that means that the only way folks are going to be able to get Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on the Atrix 2 is if a developer is keen on releasing an unofficial piece of software for AT&T’s smartphone.

Motorola Atrix HD

atrixhd

The Motorola Atrix HD is in line to receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update at some point in December from Motorola. Motorola has been very diligent about getting out upgrades to its devices now that new leadership is in place and it has often updated older phones with the latest software. We expect to see Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for the Atrix HD though it may end up being the last major Android update that the device sees.

Motorola Droid 4

droid4

Like the Atrix HD, the Droid 4 will be getting the upgrade from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Motorola says that it will take place sometime in the future though it doesn’t specify when. Reading further into that, it means that the update will roll out in 2013. The fact that it will be getting Android 4.1 is a good sign though again, it’s no guarantee that Android 4.2 Jelly Bean rolls out.

Motorola Droid Bionic

droidbionic

The Motorola Droid Bionic recently was updated with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is in line to receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. If Android 4.1 Jelly Bean does roll out for the Droid Bionic next year and thus far, it seems like a possibility, expect it to be the last update for the device. Yes, there will be a possibility that Android 4.2 rolls out but a slim one. This is an aging device.

Motorola Droid RAZR

droidrazr

The Motorola Droid RAZR, the original, is currently running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It, like the Droid Bionic, is scheduled to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at some point in the future, likely next year. The Droid RAZR is an extremely popular phone which should put pressure on Motorola to roll out Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as a second major update for the device. Don’t expect it to happen until later next year though.

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX

razrmaxx

Verizon’s Droid RAZR MAXX is, like the Droid RAZR, a popular Android phone and one that will be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at some point next year. That means that there is a good chance that it will receive Android 4.2 Jelly Bean at some point. When though is unknown but if we had to guess, we’d say that it will be awhile, possibly sometime in the deep part of next year.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD

droidrazhd

The Droid RAZR HD was one of the first phones, outside the Nexus devices, to get the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. The feat was one performed by Motorola’s new management team who hopes to lure in customers with better update support. That should translate into good things as far as the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update is concerned. Owners should expect it, but don’t expect it for a few months from now at least.

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD

maxxhd

Like the Droid RAZR HD, the Droid RAZR MAXX HD also was the benefactor of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in relatively quick fashion. And like the Droid RAZR HD, it should also see Android 4.2 Jelly Bean roll out at some point next year. Don’t expect Motorola to work another miracle with a release in a month or two but look for it to arrive in the first half of 2013.

Motorola Droid RAZR M

razrm

Motorola’s new budget Droid RAZR M was the first Motorola phone to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. And while it may not be the first to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, there is a good chance that it will see the update somewhere down the road. Nothing is confirmed yet but we’d be surprised if this phone was left on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the rest of its existence.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Sprint/Verizon Galaxy Nexus)

galaxynexus

While the Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ has already received its Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and Sprint Galaxy Nexus are still without Android 4.2. Worse yet, neither of the updates has leaked which is usually a sign that a release date is fast approaching. With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Sprint and Verizon took ages (months) to update their devices, we expect the same here.

Samsung Galaxy S2 (Galaxy S2, Epic 4G Touch)

galaxys2

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is set to receive an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, up from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, though the updates have yet to roll out officially. We’ve seen some leaks for the Sprint variant, a sign that carriers are working on the update. It’s also a sign that Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is a possibility but given that this phone is coming up on two years old, we doubt that it has much left. Android 4.2 isn’t out of the question but at this point, it’s probably unlikely.

Samsung Galaxy S3

galaxys3

The Samsung Galaxy S3, released in June of this year, already has seen Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates roll out. In fact, the international version has received two versions of Jelly Bean thus far. And while not Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, Samsung will almost assuredly be rolling out Google’s latest Android update to the over 30 million owners of this device. Look for the update at some point next year.

Samsung Galaxy Note

gnote

The original Samsung Galaxy Note is still running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but Samsung has promised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at some point in the near future. U.S. variants won’t see the update arrive until 2013 but the fact that it’s getting Android 4.1 leaves open the opportunity that it will at some point get Android 4.2. If it does look for it to happen far down the road and potentially be its last major update.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

galaxynote2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box which means that an upgrade to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is virtually guaranteed. Rumors peg the roll out as taking place in the first quarter of next year though Samsung remains mum on the subject. In any event, owners of the latest phablet from Samsung need not worry about Android 4.2. It will be out at some point.

Sony Xperia Ionxperiaion

Sony announced earlier this year that it wouldn’t be updating its 2011 Xperia phones with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Fortunately, AT&T’s Xperia Ion was released in 2012 which makes it eligible for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. When that update will arrive though is a different story and it could be awhile before owners see it. Sony plans to upgrade its first phones to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in Q1 of next year. That being said, Android 4.2 for the Xperia Ion is a possibility though don’t expect it to roll out any time soon.

Why do iOS users don’t have to concern themselves with update as much as Android users? Os it the nature of their marketing strategy. I always wanted to choose Apple over android. The only thing that is stoping me is flexibility (options) and Google’s powerful search engine. But I wish that there is less update politics with Google.

misleading article title. I don’t want to read about what “definitely” will not get 4.2. Especially when the title states “…Update List: Which Phones Will Get the New Jelly Bean?”

What I have read up on Jelly Bean 4.2 would correct the failure of ice cream sandwich Sony forced on to its 2011 LT15i and LT18i, which rely heavily on the Miro SD card. At the moment Apps placed on the SD end up with updates placed onto the internal memory filling all its memory capacity fast!!! Jelly Bean 4.2 would correct this problem, but selfishness by Sony means this will not happen… unless enough make a big enough noise that is.!!

I’m happy enough with my droid RAZR running android 4.1.2, if they update it to 4.2, GREAT, but I’m due for an upgrade anyway, so if the Droid RAZR HD ends up with key lime pie before I get 4.2, if the RAZR ever gets 4.2, I’ll just buy the RAZR or RAZR Maxx HD since I’ll get it for a discount, but for now, I’m happy as I am
