The Nexus 4 bumper case is an affordable, well designed Nexus 4 case that protects the glass back and adds a silver trim to the edge of the Nexus 4.

It’s as tough to find a Nexus 4 case as it is to order the Nexus 4 from Google, but the Nexus 4 bumper is one of the best options for protection without adding bulk or covering up the shiny back of the Nexus 4.

The Nexus 4 bumper case fits tightly on the phone adding minimal bulk and just 20 grams (about four quarters) of weight.

Review Summary:

Nexus 4 Bumper Review - 08

The Nexus 4 bumper case is a good value for Nexus 4 owners.

The Nexus 4 bumper case covers the volume and power buttons with small silver bumps. This makes it easier to find and press the buttons.

The sides of the bumper are black plastic with a sliver trim. The silver is more noticeable in person than in the photos in the Google Play Store. The silver accent swoops up at the top and bottom of the phone, which makes the Nexus 4 look a bit like the Galaxy S3.

Nexus 4 Bumper Review - 04

The Nexus 4 bumper case features a Galaxy S3-like silver accent.

The front lip and back lip of the bumper case is made out of a rubberized material that adds grip to the Nexus 4. This is an essential addition as the Nexus 4’s glas front and back is slick. The rubber lip keeps the glass back and the screen off tables and counters.

By keeping the back of the Nexus 4 open, it’s possible to still use a wireless charger, like the Nexus 4 wireless charging orb when it becomes available.

Nexus 4 Bumper Review - 09

The Nexus 4 bumper is small and light.

The case includes openings for the headphone jack, Micro USB charging port and one for the microphone on the top of the Nexus 4. Because the back is open there’s no need for cutouts around the speaker or camera.

The charger fits in the small opening without any trouble, but the Slimport HDMI adapter we reviewed takes added force and some wiggling to connect with the bumper case on the Nexus 4.

The Nexus 4 bumper won’t protect the Nexus 4 in extreme environments, but it is a nice case. Unlike the official Nexus 7 case, it is worth buying. We really like that the back of the Nexus is wide-open in this case, showing off the glittering back of the phone.

The Nexus 4 bumper case is out of stock from Google, and over $50 on Amazon. Google did not provide an estimate on when the Nexus 4 bumper will go on sale in the Google Play Store again.
