Samsung is the number one cellphone manufacturer in the world, according to a report from iSuppli.

According to the organization’s study, Samsung will displace Nokia as the top phone manufacturer in the word for 2012. Samsung phones account for 29 percent of all phones sold in 2012, as opposed to 24 percent of all phones sold in 2011. Nokia dropped down to 24 percent in 2012 from 30 percent in 2011.

Apple is number three on the list with 10 percent of all cellphones sold in 2012. Apple is the only company in the top five that doesn’t sell feature phones. The rest of the top five are ZTE in the fourth spot, and LG as number five. Companies like HTC, RIM and Huawei are noticably absent fro the list

Samsung also leads the pack in number of smartphones sold. Samsung’s incredibly large Galaxy lineup accounted for 28 percent of smartphones sold in 2012. Apple’s iPhone line came in at number two with 10 percent of smartphones sold. Nokia, HTC and RIM round out the top five, each with just 5 percent of the smartphone market.

Samsung’s strong sales were led by its two flagship phones for the year: the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. Samsug sold more than 30 million Galaxy S III units in the first few weeks, and sold more than 5 million units of the Galaxy Note II before the phone came to every major U.S. carrier.

The South Korean company’s dominance of the cellphone market isn’t limited to the high-end, however. Samsung continues to make feature phones for carriers across the globe. Samsung also releases mid-range and low-end Android smartphones in various markets, with a frequency of about one every few weeks. Samsung floods the market with inexpensive alternatives to its high-end smartphones with phones like the Galaxy S III Mini and Galaxy Grand.
