HTC: ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update Will “Be Here Soon”

Published

on

It seems that HTC finally has supplied HTC ThunderBolt owners with a concrete response as far as the ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich release date is concerned saying that owners should expect it soon while thanking them for their patience.

The HTC USA Twitter account has seemingly confirmed that the update will be heading to ThunderBolt owners soon, telling one inquiring owner on Twitter that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the ThunderBolt will “be here soon” and that the company appreciates his continued patience in waiting for the update to arrive.

The HTC ThunderBolt ICS update is still on the way it seems and better yet, it could be here soon.

Sadly, the account did not specify when HTC ThunderBolt owners might see Ice Cream Sandwich roll out but this does, at least, seem to be the confirmation that ThunderBolt owners have been looking for.

Since August, the month that HTC originally promised the HTC ThunderBolt ICS update, both HTC and Verizon have been silent in regards to any timing for the ThunderBolt update’s roll out. Their silence also prompted many to wonder whether or not the ThunderBolt ICS update would ever roll out given how long of a delay it has seen. HTC customer service representatives have been of little help, telling customers an assortment of stories in regards to the update.

While some HTC representatives have said that an update is still in the plans, at least one representative said that Verizon had decided that the ThunderBolt was better left on Ice Cream Sandwich, comments that were then denied by another representative. Needless to say, it has been a long journey for those ThunderBolt owners who have stuck around and haven’t installed an unofficial version of the update.

And that’s why a comment like this from HTC USA is absolutely huge. There is no telling how soon “soon” might be, it could definitely be weeks before we see it, but at least it looks like the update is not cancelled.

Thanks, Jason!

I really would like to have been a fly on the wall of the room where somebody from HTC or VZW actually said, “Lets just not say anything. Lets just let them wait blind because they will be upset that we haven’t figured it out yet. People are much happier knowing nothing as opposed to being told negative information.”

Most People with the Thunderbolt are on the unlimited data plan still. You think Verizon is going to let a Kick Azz ICS update happen on your Tbolt? Not going to happen. They will see to it that some kind of problem or flaw in the update will make many go crazy and just want to get a newer phone. Many won’t want to pay the full retail price for a new device and they will lose their unlimited data. You wait and see. That’s why the update is taking so long. It’s all timing and the little scheme. My advice to you is not to update to the new OS when it comes available. You won’t be doing yourself or the thunderbolt any favors that’s for damn sure.

I called HTC two days ago and was told after a short two minute hold NO it would not be getting ICS. they are as bad as the media at getting their stories straight.

    Jay,
Your premise is that if VZW releases the ICS update, then Tbolt owners will not switch to shared limited data plans. There is on slight flaw with that.
Once your 2 year contract expires, there is nothing obligating VZW to keep providing you with unlimited data. Once you are month to month, they can throttle your data or force you into a limited plan. Holding back the ICS update to will not get more people to switch to their share plans, but it might soothe some Tbolt owners who were promised the world and were delivered a product that was not fully out of beta testing.

Chizzle, you’re wrong. I know people, and have been someone that has been past the end of a contract for 6 months (me) to 1.5-ish years (my co-worker). They are not forcing anything on anyone who is at or past the end of their contract. Do you work for Verizon, trying to peddle people to get a new contract?

Umm ur way off each Verizon branch must work diferently because that is not the case with me and dealing with Verizon on my contract, its like the rest of us we believe this is a scam between the two to get you to go with new phone and change plan..

Greywolfman, You misunderstood my intent. I am not claiming to know what Verizon IS doing nor what they WILL do. I am pointing out (as someone who knows more than a bit about contract law) what Verizon CAN do. Legally they CAN stop providing unlimited data once your 2 year contract is up. Have they done that yet? I don’t think so. Have they done it for 4G? No, 4G is still less than 2 years old. Will they eventually phase out unlimited plans? I don’t know, but it makes sense that they will do so eventually. Why? To simplify their bulling and customer service expenses which cost them WAY more than the data throughput they are selling.
I am not saying that month to month customers have been shut off, I myself went month to month for a while with no change of service or terms. I am just saying there is no assurance that verizon will continue to offer that in the future. They are certainly not contractually obligated to do so.

BTW I do not work for Verizon and am very unhappy about the fact that I have to choose between keeping my unlimited data vs. getting an unsubsidized phone when my contract is up in May.

My contract is up in May I think, and I’ll be dumping Verizon and HTC at that time. Until then I guess I’ll keep hobbling along on my TBolt. At least for most of that time I hopefully now will have ICS on it. I’m looking forward to at least being able to install Chrome.I’ll be getting a Nexus 4 and finding a carrier. It’s just as well that I can’t dump Verizon quite yet, because the Nexus 4 is sold out in the U.S. right now. Maybe by that time they will have Key Lime Pie out for the Nexus 4!!

Got t-bolt on opening day and suffered, and was almost about to get galaxy s-3, and on my payday, the dna came out, and after lots of research and contemplation, decided to give HTC one last chance…I have owned the dna for over a month now, and it is a fantabulous phone in almost every regard, except adobe no longer supports flash on new androids…as for my old t-bolt, I gave it to my mom for Xmas, and after doing a hard reset and setting it up for her, it works flawlessly (grrr), other than the battery life like a ’72 dodge fuel economy…

Same story for me. Contract up in February – Verizon and HTC are over. So cruel. Hoping to go Nexus and NEVER be held hostage again.
