Untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak a Success, Don’t Upgrade to iOS 6.1

Published

on

The iOS 6 jailbreak is a success according to hacker @Planetbeing, but more work is needed before a public release is possible.

In a post on Reddit, spotted by iDownloadBlog last week, he shared success on the iPhone 5 jailbreak, saying he is running an untethered iOS 6.0.2 jailbreak on the iPhone 5.

Even though the iOS 6 jailbreak is up and running on the iPhone 5, users will need to wait for a public release. The group working on the iPhone 5 jailbreak is waiting to release a jailbreak until after iOS 6.1 is out.

Planetbeing downplayed reports that jailbreaking is done, saying, “reports of its death are highly exaggerated.”

I’m not really sure what all the doom and gloom is about. The fact is, I have an untethered iOS 6.0.2 JB running on my iPhone 5 right now.

An Untethered iOS 6.0.2 jailbreak for the iPhone 5 is successful, but not ready for release.

Why The Wait for an iOS 6 Jailbreak Release

The group working on the iOS 6 jailbreak is waiting for a public release of the jailbreak tool until they are able to save an exploit and for the iOS 6.1 release which will likely break part of the iOS 6 jailbreak.

1. releasing it would burn an exploit we want to save for ourselves so we can always get in to look at new firmware and help JB in the future, 2. iOS 6.1 is coming very soon and will likely break a small part of it anyway, there’s no point in sacrificing the many bugs it won’t break.

Don’t Upgrade to iOS 6.1 if You Want to Jailbreak

While you’ll need to wait for the iOS 6.1 release to see an untethered iPhone 5 jailbreak, you shouldn’t upgrade to iOS 6.1 when it comes out. Planetbeing is waiting for the iOS 6.1 release to avoid burning an exploit needed for the iOS 6 jailbreak, not to release an iOS 6.1 jailbreak.

Reddit user Dginc posted, “So may I assume it’s safe to upgrade to 6.1 when it’s released?”, to which Planetbing replied, “That is almost the opposite of what I said”

So, straight from the developer’s mouth, don’t upgrade to iOS 6.1 if you want to jailbreak the iPhone 5. It’s possible that an iOS 6.1 jailbreak is around the corner, but based on this comment we may be looking at an untethered iOS 6.0.2 jailbreak for the iPhone 5, before an iOS 6.1 jailbreak.

iOS 6 Jailbreak Status

Users are eagerly awaiting an iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 5. In the past week we’ve seen Pod2g call for an open iOS 7 and announce that he is planning to help work on the iOS 6 jailbreak. In the past pod2g said,

Working with @planetbeing motivates me a lot. He’s always very resourceful and he raises the bar.

Will this jailbreak work on an iPhone 4s running the version 6.0 (10A403)? And I think it’s smart too save the exploit until 6.1. Bravo.

I’d assume it would work for the iPhone 4S but I could be wrong. My hopes is that it will though.

All talk and no action. By the time a full public jailbreak is out for iOS 6, others would already be running iOS 7.

Who cares about ios6 JB? There’s nothing in it worth upgrading from ios5.
      iOS5 JB > iOS6 non JB
This mostly matters for iPhone5 owners (and new 4s owners although you should just not buy a new iPhone I it ships with an iOS you can’t JB)
