Published

on

It’s only January and already rumors of Apple’s plans for the next iPhone have been cropping up at break neck speed. Yesterday, we again saw the iPhone 6 release date pegged for the summer and now, another report claims that Apple may be looking to release a low-cost iPhone model with a larger screen for emerging markets at some point during the second half of 2013.

The rumor comes courtesy of Digitimes, a technology industry publication, that has a mixed track record but, has been accurate in the past. The publication reports that Apple may be working on a new low-cost iPhone that supposedly sports a larger display and a release date that is evidently going to take place at some point in the second half of this year.

Though no exact screen size is mentioned, the report suggests that Apple may be looking at the “prevailing trend” of 5-inch devices like the Galaxy Note 2 and Droid DNA which have been popular with consumers. It also claims that the popularity of the iPad mini in China may be a big reason why Apple is looking to release a low-cost iPhone in new markets where price is extremely important.

The iPhone 6 is rumored to be coming in different sizes and different colors.

This new iPhone, which could complement a higher-end iPhone 6, either with the same name or more likely, another name, is expected to have a new exterior design which means that it may wind up looking different than the higher-end iPhone in areas other than the screen size and price.

This lines up with what analysts have predicted thus far. Rumors suggest that  Apple will launch a new iPhone in two different sizes, possibly with an assortment of colors. If true, it would be the first time that Apple would offer two different sized iPhones from the start.

Apple’s low-cost iPhone is said to be launching in the second half of 2013, which partially lines up with what we’ve heard when it comes to the higher-end iPhone 6 release date, a release date that has been pegged numerous times as arriving during the summer. If Apple does announce the iPhone 6 in the summer, the announcement would likely come at WWDC 2013 which takes place in June.

June falls into the second half of 2013 which means that it’s possible that we could see two new iPhones launch at an event in the middle of the year.

As for the rest of the new iPhone 6, which could also potentially be called the iPhone 5S, it potentially could retain a similar design to the iPhone 5, sport a new display that’s possibly IZGO in nature, a new souped up rear camera, 4G LTE data speeds, and iOS 7.
