Nikon D5200 Coming to America for $899 Late January

Nikon’s formally introduced the much-anticipated D5200 consumer DSLR to the U.S. market at CES 2013. The  company also released a series of D5200 sample photos that will please those who’ve waited for this camera.

The new camera sports a 24.1 megapixel sensor, along with improved low-light capabilities. The D5200 will begin shipping in late January in the U.S. with an $899 price tag.

The D5200 is an improvement over the D5100, a model that’s showing its age.Nikon says that it’ll continue selling the D5100 through 2013, though the company’s likely just burning through stock.

The Nikon D5200 has a lot of the same guts as the Nikon D7000, a camera designed for serious amateurs, but packs several consumer-oriented features to make it easier for the occasional shooter to easily capture good photos. The D5200 packs the same 39-point AF system as the D7000.

The camera features a swivel display that can be used as a viewfinder or as dashboard to display camera settings. The user interface is quite nice and consumer friendly. The display can be twisted around while taking self portraits.

Nikon says the D5200 will do much better in low light than its predecessor thanks to improved image processing and an ISO range that can be pushed all the way up to 25600. The Nikon D5200 can shoot up to five frames per second, with a shutter speed of up to 1/4000 of a second.

While there are plenty of things to like about the Nikon D5200, there are some limitations that users should consider before plunking down $899 or more on a camera. The camera doesn’t have a built-in autofocus motor, which means it won’t work with some of Nikon’s best lenses. That’s a problem if a D5200 decides to upgrade to more serious Nikon DSLR down the road.

Nikon’s D5200 sample images look impressive for a camera in its price range, but we’ll have a better idea of how it performs in the real world once actual consumers with mediocre photography skills get their hands on it and start posting images to sites like Facebook and Flickr.
