iOS 6 Jailbreak: What’s Up With the iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini?
The IOS 6 Jailbreak is in the works, and while we focus on the iPhone 5 jailbreak in much of our coverage, we expect that the upcoming iOS 6 jailbreak release will deliver iPad jailbreaks.
The iOS 6 jailbreak for iPads is likely linked to the release of the first iOS 6 jailbreak. It is highly likely that this jailbreak will deliver an iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini jailbreak for devices running iOS 6.
Past jailbreaks worked on the iPhone and on the iPad, including the last major jailbreak release for iOS 5.1.1, which worked on the current generation iPhone and on current generation iPads. The current iOS 6 jailbreak is only available for older devies like the iPhone 4 and iPod touch.
Pod2g, Planetbeing and other iOS 6 jailbreak developers have yet to comment on which devices an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak will work on, but based on past releases we expect the iOS 6 jailbreak will likely work with these devices.
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 4S
- iPad 3
- iPad 4
- iPad mini
There is always the possibility that the IPad 4 jailbreak will come later as it uses a newer Apple A6X processor, but it’s likely we’ll see the hackers work to bring the release out at the same time.
So far we’ve seen proof of the iOS 6 jailbreak running on the iPad 4, iPad mini and iPhone 5. In early November 2012 MuscleNerd posted a screenshot showing the iPad mini jailbreak success. Chpwn posted a screenshot showing the iPad 4 jailbreak success shortly after. These images show it is possible to get parts of a jailbreak up and running on the iPad 4 and iPad mini, but do not mean a public release is ready and available.
Is the iPad 4 Jailbreak Legal?
Oe thing that could put the brakes on the iPad 4 jailbreak is a recent ruling that changed the legality of jailbreaking tablets like the iPad. In a ruling in late October 2012, the Librarian in charge of defining the DMCA exemptions ruled that tablets are not covered.
Essentially this ruling means it is legal to jailbreak the iPhone 5, but not to jailbreak the iPad 4. It’s not clear if this will stop the release of an iPad 4 jailbreak or just force a release designed to skirt U.S. rules.
iOS 6 iPad 4 Jailbreak Status
Progress on the iOS 6 jailbreak continues, with success reported last week, though there is no release available or release date predicted.
Users who plan to jailbreak should not upgrade to iOS 6.1 when it is released as the new version of iOS 6 breaks part of the current iOS 6 jailbreak.
Planetbing is working on an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak, which means users can restart their iPhone or iPad without being connected to a computer. This is a vast improvement over a tethered jailbreak which is not realistic for daily use for many users.
