iOS 6 Jailbreak: Why We Are Waiting for Untethered

By  |  17 Comments

One of the reasons we typically wait so long for jailbreaks, especially the iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 5 is that the team behind the work is striving to release an untethered jailbreak.

Granted there are other factors, like finding all the exploits needed and preparing an iOS 6 jailbreak tool that the average iPhone 5 owner can use, but in order to deliver a friendly iPhone 5 jailbreak the end result needs to be an untethered jailbreak.

Right now the iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 4 is available, but it only offers a tethered jailbreak, which limits the appeal and usefulness on the iPhone someone uses every day.

The good news is that Planetbeing is in possession of an untethered iPhone 5 jailbreak that runs on iOS 6.0.2. We’re still waiting for more work to be done to deliver what is essentially a private jailbreak as a public release. Hopefully pod2g’s return to the jailbreak scene will help speed things along.

Tethered vs. Untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak

The difference between a tethered and untethered jailbreak is that the iPhone must be tethered, i.e. connected, to a computer to reboot if it is only a tethered jailbreak.

iOS 6 Jailbreak Untethered vs Tethered

A tethered iPhone 5 jailbreak would leave users staring at the Apple logo if the phone reboots without being connected to a computer.

Tethered jailbreaks offer access to Cydia and all the great iOS 6 jailbreak apps, but it can be the source of great frustration if the iPhone battery drains. If this happens you won’t be able to restart and use the iPhone until it is connected to a computer to do a tethered boot. So, you could end up without the ability to make a phone call or use the iPhone while traveling or at least until you get home to a computer. Even users who are vigilant about keeping the iPhone charged may run into this problem, which is why an untethered jailbreak is preferable.

An untethered jailbreak allows the iPhone to reboot just like it can when it is stock. This removes the worry that the iPhone will be stuck in an unusable state while away from your computer.

While the difference is small, many casual jailbreak users who rely on the iPhone 5 everyday will be glad that the jailbreak team is waiting to release an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak.

I have used tethered jailbreak before and I wouldn’t mind use it again .
While is not the ideal situation at least will cover us untill the un-tethered option becomes viable.

I agree. The earlier tethered jailbreaks would not allow the phone to boot, which was a dealbreaker (for the phone anyway, not necessarily the iPad). But if I remember right, pretty much from 5.0, or maybe even as far back as 4.3, the tethered jailbreak WOULD boot and let you use most non-jailbreak apps, text, make phone calls, etc. Safari didn’t work and jailbreak apps didn’t work until you tether booted, but that’s no big deal. Makes it a usable solution for sure.

I wouldn’t use a tethered again unless its 100% proven reliable, which will never be the case. Countless times my phone had to be rebooted due to simple bugs, and don’t even think you could install cydia apps and tweaks unless at home near a computer. It got to the point where I carried a USB dongle with the ipsw and redsn0w on it so I could reboot off public computers etc! Still, at the time it was still better than stock!

Tethered jailbreak wont reboot once battery is drained. U need to use redsnow and ipsw to keep ur phone on working.

I get several emails a day asking basic jailbreak questions, I am trying to answer them so these users know what’s going on before the jailbreak is released.

I got a iPhone 4 on iOS 6.01 tethered jailbreak. Phone will boot up without computer just safari won’t work can use a different browser. When you boot tethered everything seems OK except you can open folders no biggie for me all I did this for was so I could use tetherME app and get hotspot working heck phone is really stable haven’t rebooted in a month. I installed some tweak to remove phone search thing and put cydia in a folder off main screen to help avoid someone putting spyware on my phone.. I wouldn’t mess with most tweaks.. Yet
If your trying to connect to a nexus 7 get mywi off your phone it no longer works just use tetherme and connect using Bluetooth on 3gs and can use WiFi on 4
