Samsung Galaxy S4 Rumored to Feature Wireless Charging

Published

The Samsung Galaxy S4, presumed to be coming at some point in the first half of this year to replace the Samsung Galaxy S3, has popped up again in rumors today with another potential feature emerging from the shadows. That new potential feature is support for the Qi standard of wireless charging though it appears that Samsung won’t make it easy on customers to get the feature up and running on their new Galaxy S4.

In the past few weeks, we’ve seen potential Galaxy S4 features leak out several times. From its potential display to a possible processor, the Galaxy S4 has emerged as one of the most heavily rumored, and, highly anticipated smartphones of 2013. And today, another rumor has found its way to the surface, and it’s one that should have potential Galaxy S4 owners excited.Galaxy-S4-Display-575x3333

According to a report from Korean publication DDaily, the Galaxy S4 will feature wireless charging using the familiar Qi standard. Phones like the Nokia Lumia 920 on AT&T already use the Qi standard.

Evidently, Samsung thought about using different wireless charging for the Galaxy S4, specifically, resonant magnetic coupling. If it used that technology, the Galaxy S4 may have been able to charge at up to two meters. This is something that we heard rumored for the Galaxy S3 prior to its launch last year but it was something that never ended up materializing. It appears that that will be the case with the Galaxy S4 as well as Samsung reportedly can’t get it up to consumer-grade.

Samsung will apparently offer wireless charging with the Galaxy S4 but it won’t come stock. Instead, customers who wish to have the feature will need to buy a back plate for the device along with a wireless charger. Neither will be bundled and it appears that a price for both remains undetermined.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was supposed to receive something similar but Samsung has yet to release any sort of official wireless charging kit for the aging device.

In addition to the wireless charging, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is rumored to feature a 5-inch FHD display with 1080 resolution, a quad-core processor that could be Exynos 5 Octa in nature, a 13MP camera, Android Jelly Bean at the very least and a launch date at Mobile World Congress in February.

A specific release date for the Galaxy S4 is still unknown.

I don’t why nobody knows but the GS3 has this capability built in as well. Finding the correct back was a pain but I was able to find one at a local Verizon store.

I wouldn’t get too excited about this – Samsung said the GS3 would have wireless charging – they have yet to deliver.
