Last week at CES 2013, Sony took the wrappings off of its latest high-end smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z, a device that features all of the features expected of a current-generation smartphone, except for one thing. While the Xperia Z has a large 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor, 13MP camera and a fantastic dust and water resistant design, the Xperia Z is going to be launching with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Before November, that wouldn’t have been a problem. In November, Google released Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, its latest version of Jelly Bean that has hit a select number of devices over the past few months. While not a massive upgrade over Android 4.1, it still brings some useful features nonetheless and many of those features can be see in the video below.

With 2013 now here and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean now a couple of months old, Android enthusiasts and and average consumers likely were expecting these next-generation devices to arrive with Android 4.2. Sony, however, did not deliver with the Xperia Z and instead the phone will be launching Android 4.1 though according to it, the device won’t be staying there for long.

According to Sony, the Xperia Z will be updated to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean shortly after the device launches in the first quarter of this year. The company remained mum on specifics and it could be that “shortly after launch” turns into months rather than weeks. Unsurprisingly, the company said it would share details in the weeks ahead.

Still, that acknowledgement is better than none at all, and it’s more than what most devices have at this point. So far, companies remain mum on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean updates and so far, only Nexus devices have the new software on board.

Being eligible for a smartphone upgrade during January 2013 is an unpleasant experience.
