Samsung Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean Update Starts Rolling Out

Published

The long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update has started rolling out today, much earlier than the software’s expected arrival which Samsung had said would be sometime in February. Instead, it appears that the roll out has begun, starting with the international version of the Galaxy S2, known as the GT-I9100.

Earlier this month, a report claimed that Samsung would be rolling out the Galaxy S2 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update at some point in February. Turns out, the company has started the roll out much earlier as the update is reportedly rolling out now.

The Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update roll out has begun.

According to SamMobile, and seemingly confirmed by XDA Forums, the Galaxy S2 Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update has rolled out to owners of the GT-I9100, that is the international version of the Galaxy S2, in Spain. Currently, it’s the only region that appears to have access to the update with other regions likely on the way in the weeks ahead. As we’ve seen with other updates, it often takes a few weeks from the first roll out for other regions to see it so be patient.

We imagine that the update is available either through Samsung Kies or Over-the-Air, but for those that don’t wish to wait, the firmware can be manually downloaded here for installation. For those that aren’t accustomed to installing software in this manner, we suggest waiting for the official roll out or updating through Samsung Kies which is the software Samsung uses to push its updates.

Carrier release dates will vary from region to region and those in the United States will likely be near the bottom in terms of the time it takes for the software to roll out. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and U.S. Cellular all offer the Galaxy S2 and we imagine that we’ll see five different release dates for each. No carrier has given a time table for the update so it could be awhile before Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean rolls out.

In any event, this is great news for those with the aging Galaxy S2 as it will bring all of the benefits of Jelly Bean along with it. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, while not the latest version is a huge upgrade over Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and those who are able will definitely want to install it.

We imagine that this could be the end of the road for the Galaxy S2, but owners will still want to hold out hope for Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
