AT&T One X Jelly Bean Update Beaten Again

Published

on

Another day, another carrier beating AT&T to the HTC One X Jelly Bean update punch as TELUS in Canada has announced that it is now rolling out its One X Android 4.1 update leaving owners of the AT&T version of the device frustrated.

Since the latter half of 2012, owners of AT&T’s HTC One X have been wondering where their update to Jelly Bean might be. Specifically, owners have been waiting since October for a sign of the update as October marked the beginning of the HTC One X Jelly Bean roll out. The roll out, which began in regions across the globe, has started to trickle to North America in recent weeks with Canadian carrier Rogers updating its One X with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and now TELUS rolling out its version of the update.

The AT&T HTC One X Jelly Bean update remains missing.

TELUS made the announced over Twitter, confirming that the update is now rolling out Over-the-Air, and also saying that the update is available to pull through the device’s settings for those that don’t wish to wait for the roll out to arrive.

The update will be a huge upgrade over Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the phone’s previous operating system, and it’s an update that owners of the TELUS HTC One X are going to wait to download and install as quickly as possible.

Of course, this roll out also means that another North American carrier has beaten AT&T to the HTC One X update, something that has left owners of the One X extremely peeved. What’s worse is that there is currently no time table for the update’s release on AT&T as neither AT&T nor HTC has made it clear as to when AT&T One X owners should expect the update to arrive.

Instead, owners are still in the dark, nearly four months after the HTC One X Jelly Bean update started rolling out to One X owners around the globe. It’s possible that AT&T may make the jump straight to Android 4.2 but given how many other One X variants were updated to Android 4.1, that seems like a long shot.

This is getting really silly. AT&T stores have an enormous display in the middle of the store dedicated to the HTC One X. They sell it as a flagship device and then don’t support it like one. The sad part of this is what an absolutely fantastic device the One X is. If AT&T didn’t insist on loading it down with utter crapware to sell their add-ons, this update could have been streamlined.

Yeah, just got off the phone with At&t and of course, they have no idea, so the customer service rep gives me HTC’s phone # and says call them and ask when it will b released….lol… I said, really!!, So they control when it’s released to you guys? He said yeah they do. what a joke!!

It wouldn’t shock me at all if AT&T never releases the update. If they can’t get their crapware working right on it (Lord knows the AT&T Barcode Scanner provides SO MUCH added value!) then the JB update will never see the light of day.

It’s almost comical at this point. I’m starting to compare this update to vaporware like Duke Nukem Forever.

AT&T has lost me as a customer because of this. I will be switching to a Nexus 4 and prepaid as soon as possible.

Sent from my HTC One X, an AT&T 4G LTE (NOT ON JELLYBEAN) device

AT&T has just lost my loyalty and respect. Seriously, the only job ATT does is that they just keep sending my ads and mails with a bunch of offers convincing me to buy their devices, but they don’t support whatever they advertise.

I am on at&t. I said the hell with them, rooted/ unlocked bootloader and put stock htc sense 4+ with 4.1.1 rom from rogers on the phone. works flawlessly with NO att bloatware! Did a quadrant test and it is way faster than my friends SIII

I am tired of AT&T and their long delay time frame. I had the same issue with my Samsung Infuse. Took a long time coming then there was an issue with it so they pulled it for another two months. I bought the One X figuring that it would be updated for at least the next two to three updates, but if I am going to have to wait months for them I will be switching carriers and going with a Nexus. It is really a shame for them since I have five lines on my account with data plans and occasionally international features.

You guys are all drama queens. It’s just an update. It’s not going to make your phone way better than it is now. I am also getting impatient with the update but i’m not going to make a fit and switch phones or carriers.

Christian – if you’re not contemplating switching carriers after they treat you like this, you’re not paying attention. This is a major update, and they’re holding out on loyal customers just to add their bloat. Wake up.

Only buying a Nexus phone from now on. I’m ok with AT&T’s service, but this update bullshit is just seriously annoying. I already went through it with the Samsung Captivate once and thought HTC would be better, but I think it’s AT&T which is the big problem with regard to updates.

Stick with a Nexus phone and never worry about updates again.

AT&T is a good network but my One X is garbage. The phone has so many issues! The only reason I’m dying for this update is to see if it fixes the bugs the phone has, which I’m sure it won’t.

I ordered a Nexus 4 for my personal phone to run on TMo – sick of waiting forever. My work phone remains my One X – it is a beautiful phone but I am sick of having my hands tied by ATT. From now only, only going to be Nexus Phones. I got stranded on the Atrix w/o even getting ICS and now this One X wait is too much. I should have simply bought the international version, I should have known better than to count on ATT.

I’ve had 4.2 on my galaxy nexus for over a month, I wish my One X was as smooth and silky, and Google Now is amazing.

Guys the update isn’t delayed because of bloatware as the AT&T software is already running on other JB AT&T phones. So they know their bloatware works on JB. Whats taking them so long is the certification process for JB on the AT&T network for that specific phone. Every handset vendor takes the stock JB code and adds to it to support their specific phone. AT&T has checks in place to audit what the vendors OS customization’s are and how they could impact the network and security of the service. I’d rather they take the time to make sure the update is going to work correctly and securely. How would you like it if the hardware manufactures OS customization included some software to track who you called and where you web surfed? I’m not happy its taking this long for AT&T to get us the JB update for my HTC-OneX but at least I understand why they do what they do.

      02/17/2013 at 12:33 pm

And what makes you think you are not getting track. I shows up in your bill who you call and the phone number, as for browser the same they now which pages and websites you visit. Now I’m running JB on custom Rom and let me tell you I don’t have any problems is based on the Telus OTA, I can make phone calls, send and receive mms sms, surf the web.

Fail…. Key lime pie will roll out late spring. F**k! I hate AT&T! How can Apple roll out updates all at once? I give up, I’m going back to my Razor. (the old school one) I can try to pull off a retro tech hipster vibe, but who am I kidding? I wonder how updates for the bb z10 will be. I washed my hands of blackberry years ago, but remember updates all the time for it.

This is totally disappointing. I thought the OneX was a flagship device that was going to get top tier support. Instead, it’s just like everything else on AT&T. Once they have the sale, they never update it or bother with it. When I asked a rep about the update, he told me that I could buy the OneX+ at full retail price to get the update. Are you kidding me???? Sad to think that for all that is good with this device, AT&T can’t support it. If AT&T really cared about it’s customers, they would make updates a priority for people with flagship devices. I hate to admit it, but I’m really thinking about going back to an iPhone. At least with that I can get updates and support and not feel like I have to buy a new device every 6 months.
