Is it Too Soon to Wait for the iPhone 5S Release Date?

Published

Rumors and analyst estimates put the iPhone 5S release this summer, three to four months earlier than Apple’s last two iPhone releases which has consumers asking questions about the next iPhone.

With iPhone 5S rumors already in full swing, and the possibility of an earlier release date, we are already hearing questions from readers and friends about the iPhone 5S.

The most popular question so far isn’t what is the iPhone 5S or if Apple is going to include a larger screen, it’s

Should I wait for the iPhone 5S?

The iPhone 5S release is in the minds of the average consumer much earlier than we observed for the iPhone 5, and there’s good reason for the intense interest in the iPhone 5S.

iPhone 5S release date wait

One example of how the iPhone 5S might look.

Verizon started selling the iPhone 4 in February 2011, selling 2.2 million iPhones in the first quarter it was available. Many of these iPhone owners will soon be eligible for an upgrade. While some iPhone users surely upgraded to the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, the readers asking if the iPhone 5S is worth waiting for are usually holding an iPhone 4 when they ask us.

The other group of potential iPhone 5S customers who are asking us about the iPhone 5S release are HTC ThunderBolt owners who are fed up with the lack of a ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update, especially after seeing the older iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.

In addition to Verizon customers, there are plenty of AT&T and Sprint customers looking at a new phone. The decision to wait for the iPhone 5S is easier for T-Mobile users who can expect the first official T-Mobile iPhone this year. There’s no confirmation that T-Mobile and Apple will hold out for the iPhone 5S, but it seems likely.

To sum it up, there is no shortage of users eligible for an upgrade between now and the potential June or July iPhone 5S release.

Reasons to Wait for the iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5 is a good smartphone, one of the best available on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and even on T-Mobile. It’s easy to get trapped in the cycle of waiting for the next big smartphone to arrive, but at some point it makes sense to look to the future. iPhone 5S features and specs are still largely unknown, but with a potential summer release smart shoppers should look at the following reasons.

More Features Down the Road

ios-6-logo-hi-res-460x460Apple is well-known for supporting new versions of iOS on older devices, but the iPhone 5S will undoubtedly get upgrades to new iOS versions for longer than the iPhone 54.

We’ve also seen that Apple keeps the best features for newer versions, keeping Siri on the iPhone 4S and keeping the higher-end Maps features off the iPhone 4. The iPhone 3GS saw an upgrade to iOS 6, but it lacks basic features like VIP list, Shared Photo Stream and others.

By waiting until the iPhone 5S release, users can expect a longer period of time without needing an upgrade. Of course, if you are a user who upgrades every year or every two years, this is less of an issue.

Better Battery Life

Rumors suggest the iPhone 5S will feature a Sharp IGZO display which uses new screen technology to offer a better touch experience and better power management.

The screen is one of the biggest battery killers on smartphones, and a more efficient display could help the iPhone 5S battery last longer than the iPhone 5’s.

We don’t expect a larger screen on the iPhone 5S based on comments by Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Better Camera

Another iPhone 5S rumor is that Apple will upgrade the camera in the iPhone 5S, giving users a better flash and a new camera with a f2.0 aperture. This is an upgrade over the f2.4 aperture on the iPhone 5.

Expect a smarter flash on the iPhone 5S and camera improvements.

It’s not clear what if anything Apple will do to the camera sensor found in the iPhone 5.

More Power, Better Security

One thing users can count on is a better processor. Apple typically uses a new processor in each new iPhone and we expect the same with the iPhone 5S. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities believes Apple will use an Apple A7 processor. There are no details on what this new processor would deliver in terms of features and graphics.

Apple is also rumored to include a fingerprint reader in the iPhone 5S, allowing users to log in with a swipe of their fingerprint, for better security.

Color Options

Users that want an iPhone with a touch of color may want to wait for the iPhone 5S, which is rumored to include color options similar to the iPod touch 5th generation.

This iPhone 5S mockup shows color options, though Apple would likely implement it differently.

If this comes to life, users could show off their favorite color without the need for a case or paying a third-party to color the iPhone.

The Gotta Be Mobile team is split over whether Apple will add color options to the iPhone 5S.

So, to answer your question, it’s not too soon to wait for the iPhone 5S release, but not all users will need the rumored new features.
