iOS 6.1 Fixes Purchased Apps Crash in iPad App Store

Kevin Purcell —  01/28/2013

Open the iPad App Store and tap on the Purchased Section. If it fails to load for a long time and then crashes the app, you’re not alone. Apple finally admitted to a person contacting tech support that the company is aware of the issue.

Fortunately, iOS 6.1 beta 4 seems to offer a fix and until Apple releases iOS 6.1 there’s a workaround.

The behavior affected us on an iPad mini and the third generation New iPad. The list looks like it’s trying to load, but after a very long delay it doesn’t do a thing. Then finally the app disappears kicking the user back to the home screen.

Here’s a two page thread about the issue at Apple’s support page.

Here at GottaBeMobile at least two of our staff experienced this. It seems to affect the iPad only and hits only those running iOS 6. We still own an original iPad and it doesn’t affect that device since it only runs iOS 5. The first post in the Apple Support Communities thread experienced the same with an iOS 5 iPad able to reach the section.

ipad app store purchased apps section fails in ios 6

iPad App Store Purchased apps section fails to load in iOS 6 with a large library of apps

Patrick Jordan of iPad Insight experienced this issue and called Apple to see if they could offer a fix. The call bore no fruit except that they escalated his issue and told him they knew about it and could not offer a fix at this time.

The “Apple senior advisor” told Jordan that the issue affected those who own a large library of apps. His purchase history lists 1,212 iPad apps and 1,276 iPhone apps. One of our accounts with the issue shows 909 iPad apps and 1,254 iPhone apps purchased. We don’t know how many a person must own to put them over the threshold before they start experiencing this anomaly.

This acknowledgement from Apple brings hope that Apple may fix it in the final version of iOS 6.1. We can confirm that as of iOS 6.1 beta 4 it is partially fixed. When a user taps on the Purchased section it still takes a very long time to load the list, but the app no longer crashes.

don't use purchased apps to install on iPad

Purchased apps show an Install button instead of a price or Free

There’s a workaround until 6.1 shows up. Install purchased apps by connecting the iPad to a computer and transfer the apps via iTunes or find the app in the app store and download it there. All purchased apps will show a button that reads “Install” like the image above instead of the price. Apple doesn’t charge for apps installed this way from the App Store.

  1. Hello, just made the update to 6.1 and that doesn’t change the problem. Not for me at least.

In my case I’m not able to access my purchased history neither form iPhone (4s) or iPad (3) my account purchase history lists 8744 apps for iphone and 2765 apps for ipad, so I’m not even trying to hide my purchases to pass under 900 or 460 apps as I could read in Apple’s support thread.

I’ts unbelievable that Apple could not undo something to get back to what worked il an former version of iOs

    • Ditto. I felt really frustrated and held on upgrading my iPhone 4s because my upgraded 3rd gen iPad shows the problem. I was hoping 6.0.1 and then 6.1 would fix the problem but no. To make matters worse I have upgraded my iPhone 4s to 6.1 after reading this article and now neither of my devices is able to show my purchased apps.

  2. I got tired waiting for my Purchased loading routine since way back Sept 2012 & iOS 6.1 doesn’t seemed to work its magic. Hiding unwanted apps to solve the issue? I got tired hiding…. Sort of record breaker for the MIA Purchased section…. I’d prefered really deleting & trashing those unwanted apps to free up valuable space in iTunes library, not hiding. Will there ever be a real solution to this no show Purchased page issue?

  3. this is amazing! are in the same condition! on iphone 4s(ios6.1)and ipod touch 4G (ios6.1) crashes when loading purchases but not on iPad 3(ios6.1) or even on 3g iPod touch (ios5)

  4. It’s a poorly written software, Apple is not great at background services like this.

  5. My updating just made the matters worse, the App Store crashes almost all the time on me now!

  6. I can’t access any part of the App Store from ipad-4. Worked fine before 6.1 update. Pathetic, now I understand why the stock is collapsing !

  7. Hi, just to let all know. I upgraded my iPad2 to iOS6.1.2 yesterday & now i can view my Purchase….finally seeing the light after 5 months in hibernation😑. Hoping the rest of everyone else are able to view the section now.
Cheers all 😀 & have a nice day.
