Nexus 4 Return to Google Play Store Imminent?

Published

on

It looks like the Nexus 4 could be returning to the U.S. Google Play Store sooner than expected as the device has moved from ‘Sold Out’ to ‘Temporarily Out of Stock’ through Google’s online shopping portal.

Update: Nexus 4 in Stock in U.S. Google Play Store

Since the beginning of December, both the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 4 variants have been sold out through the Google Play Store with both devices listed as ‘Sold Out’ in bright red text. Now though, the web pages for both devices have changed, a sign that stock could be coming back to the Play Store in the near future.

The Nexus 4 could return to the Play Store soon.

Both the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 4 models are now listed as being “Temporarily Out of Stock” in white lettering. Where the Add to Cart button should be is a message from Google that says “We are out of inventory. Please check back soon.” Given that language, the fact T-Mobile store now has Nexus 4 stock and the fact that Best Buy started selling the Nexus 4 today, it could be that we see the unlocked Nexus 4 make its triumphant return soon.

Of course, the changes to Google’s language aren’t confirmation and it could be a matter of weeks before we see the device emerge once again. Remember, LG said that it hoped to have the supply issues worked out by mid-February. However, it’s clear that something is up and hopefully, it means a fully stocked Nexus 4 in the Google Play Store soon.

While the Nexus 4 has been in and out of stock through T-Mobile, the unlocked Nexus 4 has been sold out since December with no return in sight. Since then, LG and Google have exchanged barbs with LG claiming that Google wasn’t prepared for the demand of its new Nexus smartphone.

Demand for the smartphone has seemingly caused the device to be one of the hardest devices to find in recent memory. Of course, those looking to get the phone right away are able to through sites like eBay and Craigslist, but the pricing there is much more expensive than Google’s asking prices.

We have reached out to Google to see what the changes might mean for those looking to buy an unlocked Nexus 4.

Hi, I’m Andy, (smadger on XDA)

After the first batch of Nexus 4s went missing I created the “Where’s my Nexus 4 – Register your Complaint” site to get Google’s attention, it appeared to work and opened up a dialogue with us.

We promised we would track their progress and now mkII of the site is up and running. It has nothing to do with Google, but should allow us to track the new orders, and provide a unified voice if there are problems.

If you manage to place an order for a new Nexus 4 device, please think about signing up – http://www.axiopo.com

If you have any questions, get in touch through the site.

    Thanks

    Andy

I posted this same story on the AndroidCentral.com forums. One of the replies, which made sense, suggested that this was only a PR move from Google, as ‘Temporarily Out Of Stock’ looks a lot better than ‘Sold Out’. I agree. I would like to think the return of this phone to stock is ‘imminent’, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
