Verizon Approves HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update

Published

on

In some fantastic news for HTC ThunderBolt owners, Verizon has approved the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update which means that a roll out should be taking place in the near future, a roll out that will be coming just about five months later.

Just a day after we told you that the HTC ThunderBolt update was still in the works comes Verizon’s approval of the ThunderBolt’s Android 4.0 update that has long been delayed. The update was originally supposed to have rolled out in August though HTC delayed the update indefinitely. Since then, while HTC has said that it was in the works, it remained mum on a release date.

The HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update has been approved.

Unfortunately, today’s approval does not bring a release date to the table, but it does mean that a roll out is extremely close. Potentially within a few hours or even a few days.

The official build will be 7.02.605.06 which will bring the HTC ThunderBolt up from Android 2.3 Gingerbread and bring it to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich while tacking on HTC Sense 3.6. Needless to say, the differences between the two are massive and this will be a welcomed upgrade for HTC ThunderBolt owners who have been waiting for months on end.

The update is 395MB in size which means that those who do choose to install it will want to set aside a bit of time in order to install the software. Typically these updates can take 30 minutes and because the HTC ThunderBolt is so old, it very well could take that long.

Droid Incredible 2 owners must wait for their ICS update.

Not that that matters to owners of the aging smartphone. What really matters is that the update is here and that it will be bringing all of the ICS goodies to the table including a new user interface, Face Unlock, new Folders, Multitasking functionality, and more.

HTC ThunderBolt owners should be on the look out for the update soon, though, we caution against mashing the check for update button.

Too late, will never purchase a HTC device again, 2 years and nothing! Pathetic and the number one reason why I buy direct from Google now!

Too little too late. I upgraded 2 weeks ago and tossed that brick in the garbage.

I love my Tbolt! There’s no other phone out there yet that I’d want to “upgrade” to. I’ve had 0 issues with mine (knock on wood!), and it does everything I want/need it to do and then some. With the Seidio 3500mAh battery I have no battery issues. I can (and have) go for days without charging it. And no other phone out there has a case made for it like the Seidio case I have.

Yeah, I was becoming frustrated with the tardiness of this latest update; I’m really glad it’s finally here! I planning on keeping this phone for a while longer yet. Maybe I’ll upgrade when they release a Thunderbolt 2. ;)

Thanks for the news! Hopefully it’ll go green sometime over the weekend.

Wow i was so set on getting rid of this phone come march and replace it with something but now I’m moving to Europe and need this baby to run a few more months until the s4 comes out. Hoping some devs make a solid and stable rom out of this soon and then the wifi+skype+whatsapp begins

I’m really excited for ics to come out for my phone, however Samsung will be my phone of choice when I upgrade. I will be damned if i purchace anothe HTC device due to the way they abandoned TB owners after creating the most hype in a phone since the microtac era of pocketable celluar devices. Sorry HTC but you are the weakest link…

The only cell phone maker has better update record than HTC is Apple. Google does not make cell phone, Nexus is screwed by Verizon all the time also. Samsung is much worse just look at Droid Charge, Samsung Droid Charge will NEVER get ICS update. Thunderbolt is not my main phone any more. But it’s still working and used as home phone through VOIP/Google Voice. And I am keeping it around in case something happened to my main phone.

I’ve had my TBolt since summer 2011 and have been following this as well. I love this little tank of a phone and its kickstand. The previous (esp the last) updates took care of most of the minor glitches I was experiencing. As long as this ICS update has been done right, I’ve got no problem with the long delay.
I’ve got a friend with one of the recent Samsung Galaxy’s, the power button has already gave out and he’s out of warranty. No such problems with my (older) TBolt. Looking forward to ICS and hoping mine keeps truckin’

Maaan, I hope so! The Incredible 2 has been such a buggy glitch-infested nightmare, that latent update, which might address some of its issues, is so overdue!

Did anyone notice the small print at the bottom of the announcement that said Dinc 2 owners must wait for their update. It only appeared in the articles reproduction, but I couldn’t find it on the original at Verizon’s site. What gives Adam?

Was just informed today that this update will be coming out in batches… OVER THE NEXT 3 WEEKS!!!!! It’s like WTF, seriously?

Well I called Verizon and they confirmed That ICS is out but they are saying it will be released in waves. Come on like there are really that many Thunderbolts left out there they need to release it in waves.

They release in waves so if there’s a problem with the release, they don’t crash everybody’s phone all at once. They send out a batch and wait to see what problems people experience and if they need to halt the update to fix them before releasing more. I’m anxiously waiting too, but do you really want to be one of the first batch that find out the update has big issues?
