Wait for Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Update Continues

Published

on

Today, Google rolled out the latest Android update, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, for the Nexus 10, Nexus 7 and the GSM Galaxy Nexus. The update is currently rolling out to owners of the three devices and is also available through a manual update for those that can’t wait. One device that the device is unavailable for is the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, a Nexus device that remains on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with no Android 4.2 updates in sight.

All the way back in September, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus became the last Nexus device in the United States to receive it Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. Since then, the device has remained on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, something that has frustrated owners of the device who at one point thought that they had bought a Nexus smartphone.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus is still stuck on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Earlier this year, Sprint rolled out Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for its Galaxy Nexus, a roll out that came months after Google pushed the update to the Nexus 7 and the GSM Galaxy Nexus. And since then, Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners have been wondering when their device might be getting the upgrade.

Today, they did not get that answer. In fact, today’s Android 4.2.2 roll out now means that the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is a full four updates behind as it has missed out on the Android 4.1.2 update, the Android 4.2 update, the Android 4.2.1 update and now the Android 4.2.2 update.

Instead, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is once again the last Nexus to a major Android update, proving Andy Rubin’s words about the Verizon Galaxy Nexus’ bad experience to be true for many owners.

Unfortunately, inquiries to both Samsung and Verizon about the update’s whereabouts have proved fruitless as both companies remain mum on the timing or version of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus’ Android 4.2 update. It could be that the device receives the Android 4.2.1 update rather than Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, given the timing of the update, but again, nothing is certain.

With the release of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean last year, Verizon’s roll out came a short time after Sprint’s, but given that we haven’t seen any recent leaks, Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners may be in for a bit of a wait.

I love the fact that I’m never getting a Nexus device on Verizon again…. As a matter of fact when my contract is up I’m out

Just a quick update… Verizon has NO plans whatsoever to update this device again. Spent over an hour on the phone with them discussing the lack of updates. They say that since this phone is officially retired, they have “absolutely no plans whatsoever to provide any additional updates to this device”.

I was lied to when I purchased two of these phones and I’m fuming mad right now!

Basically… Verizon Nexus owners were told to f*** off and root.

The image is posted on the factory image page. It’s the same one that’s been posted there since September of last year. (JRO03O)

Since that time, the Sprint version (also CDMA) has had 4 updates and they’re getting ready to receive 4.2.2. I’d be surprised if the Sprint version doesn’t receive Key Lime Pie in June. Heck, even the Nexus S has an image for 4.1.2. Meanwhile, the Verizon version is totally dependent on consumers loading ROMs on rooted devices for updates.

The point is that this “fake Nexus” device was promoted as a consumer device… not a developer device. Since it was released, it’s seen two late updates (ICS and JB 4.1.1) and nothing since September. Not even bugs fixes that still plague the device. Either way, it fails at both a consumer device and a developer device.

Basically, they treated the Nexus just like any other POS OEM skinned phone on the network and left it to die. You can’t even buy one from Verizon at this point (retired). It leaves the “consumer” to know how to root a device to get the “pure Google experience” that they already paid for.

What steams me is that Verizon (their empoyees, at least) along with popular PC magazines, promoted this phone as the pure Google experience. I even said to one Verizon employee, when I purchased my first GNex, “…and with this phone, I get the updates straight from Google!” to which he readily agreed!

I’m surprised someone hasn’t brought a class action suit on behalf of all the verizon galaxy nexus owners. Clearly verizon falsely advertised this phone.

I’m down. These “updates” have been horrible. So let’s jump the shark here and stick it to Big Red like they’ve done to us!

VZ GNex is easy to root then flash a 4.2 ROM yourself and that is how I keep current. That being said, I will be leaving Verizon and will only buy a “real” nexus in the future. Great phone with horrible support from VZ.

No updates on a supposed pure google phone on verizon. Bullshit. Once my contract is up my wife and I are leaving!

Both Verizon and Google are to blame for this. First Google pulled their support for Verizon’s 4G network (device drivers). This was available for Verizon customer’s who rooted their device. Secondly, Verizon did not support this device with official OTA updates. Shame on you both.

I had the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and was one of the biggest complainers regarding the lack of updates for what was supposed to be a “pure Google” Nexus device. I have since moved on to a Windows Phone (Icon) and love it. However, now we are waiting on the Cyan WP8.1 update from Verizon on this phone too. I think it is completely unfair that Google and Microsoft phone users have to wait for “testing” on our phones while iPhone users get their updates the day Apple releases it. I think it might be time for a class action lawsuit against Verizion for DISCRIMINATION based on support of our divices. Why should Apple receive preferential treatment for updates for their devices? We pay the same amount for our plans and devices, who why can’t Verizon provide us the same ability to update our devices directly from the manufacturer like Apple iPhone users?
