The Nexus 4 Android 4.2.2 update roll out is under way and in addition to enhancements, it looks like the update also takes away an unofficial feature that was found nesting inside the Nexus 4 in the form of unofficial LTE support.

Earlier this week, the Android 4.2.2 update starting rolling out to various Nexus devices including the Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the GSM Galaxy Nexus.

Yesterday, the update finally emerged for Google’s most current Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 4, and the update should be rolling out gradually over the next few days.

The Nexus 4 Android 4.2.2 update has apparently killed its unofficial LTE support. For now.

Those who don’t wish to wait for the update can manually install the update but there is a reason why some owners might want to hold off, at least for the time being.

Back when the Nexus 4 first arrived, it was found to have LTE capabilities on Band 4. However, it looks like those who might be using that unofficial LTE support might want to avoid installing Android 4.2.2 because as Anandtech found, the update kills Nexus 4’s unofficial LTE support.

The Nexus 4 has an LTE chip on board and because of that, some users, mostly in Canada, have been able to get it up and running on LTE even though the device is marketed as an HSPA+ smartphone. In other words, by using LTE Band 4,  they were able to take advantage of LTE, even though the Nexus 4 is not considered to be an LTE device.

Those trying to access LTE through the settings will now be directed to “WCDMA Preferred” instead.

It seems now that the Android 4.2.2 update has killed off support for that LTE Band 4 which means that the dormant LTE that some users were taking advantage of is dead. That means that those who may have been using Band 4 for LTE purposes might want to avoid the update for the time being. Or, better yet, figure out a way to not use the new radios that came with the update.

The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update is currently rolling out Over-the-Air to Nexus 4 owners and is the latest update for Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.
