Samsung’s Bold Galaxy S4 Plans Could Strain iPhone 5S Launch
Early reports indicated Samsung is planning to sell 10 million Galaxy S4 devices per month, and in a new note to investors, by way of BGR, Jeffries analyst Peter Misek claims that Samsung is planning on building 100 million Galaxy S4 units.
It’s not surprising to hear that Samsung is prepping for a record-setting launch. Misek estimates that Samsung will sell a total of 60 million Galaxy S3 devices. Samsung announced 40 million sold in January.
According to Misek, Samsung’s ambitious Galaxy S4 launch is,
“leading some suppliers to say that they will reallocate resources away from Apple.”
Apple is mum on the iPhone 5 sales figures other than an announcement that the company sold 5 million in the first weekend. The Galaxy S3 reached 10 million in sales in July, less than two months after launching.
If Misek is correct, Samsung’s 100 million Galaxy S4 launch has the potential to disrupt the supply of Apple’s next iPhone, likely the iPhone 5S. The Galaxy S4 launch is expected in March, with an international Galaxy S4 release in April. The Galaxy S4 is rumored to arrive in the U.S. in May or June, close to the rumored iPhone 5S launch.
Misek also believes Apple is planning to start production of the iPhone 5S in March, similar to the timing Samsung likely has in mind for the Galaxy S4 production. As the rumored Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S prepare to battle for market share they may already be battling for the components that go inside them. If suppliers can not meet the needs of Apple and Samsung it could lead to shortages of the Galaxy S4 and or the iPhone 5S at launch.
Samsung learned the hard way how much supply issues can affect the launch of a smartphone after losing an estimated 2 million sales during the first months of the Galaxy S3 launch when the company had to scrap 600,000 plastic casings of the Blue model. Recently the poorly managed Nexus 4 launch frustrated consumers, leaving many to wait months to buy the Nexus 4 after Google reportedly underestimated the demand.
Samsung Galaxy S4 & iPhone 5S Rumors
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is rumored to arrive in the next month with a 4.99-inch 1080P Full HD display and possibly a touch free control option that allows users to control the phone by hovering their finger above the screen. The Galaxy S4 will reportedly use a Galaxy S3 style design with a physical home button and no S Pen, but with a thinner profile.
Inside expect a quad-core processor, possibly the latest Samsung Exynos Octa 5 and 5G WiFi. The Galaxy S4 will also likely feature an improved camera and the latest Samsung Nature UI inspired software.
The iPhone 5S is rumored for a June launch with a design much like the iPhone 5. Current rumors suggest Apple will improve the camera on the iPhone 5S and there are hints that Apple could choose to include a fingerprint reader for security.
Additional rumors point to the same size display, but the possibility for new screen technology that will allow Apple to deliver batter battery life.
