Google Promises “Insanely” Better Nexus Cameras

Future Nexus smartphones from Google could have insanely better cameras according to Google’s Senior VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra who promises that the company is committed to making future Nexus smartphones into fantastic cameras.

As we head into 2013, we’re already hearing rumors of smartphones boasting superior camera technology. The HTC M7, now known as the HTC One, is rumored to be coming with a 4.3 Ultrapixel rear camera which uses three 4.3MP sensors to shoot a crisp, clear image.

Additionally, the Galaxy S4 is rumored to have a 13MP camera, the iPhone 5S is thought to possibly have a 13MP shooter, and Nokia is rumored to be planning a Nokia EOS device with a PureView camera. Not to mention, the Sony Xperia Z is already out toting a 13MP camera that will set the tone for the rest of the year.

It looks like Google-branded Nexus devices might not be left out of the equation either as Vic Gundotra, in a comment made on Google+, by way of Android Central, claims that Google is committed to making future Nexus smartphones into great cameras.

His response was in regards to a question from a camera user who exclaimed that he wanted to replace his heavy camera with the camera of a smartphone.

Gundotra’s comments don’t confirm anything specifically, and they aren’t surprising given the way smartphone camera technology is heading, but it is reassuring for those that consistently buy Nexus-branded phones which offer vanilla Android, early updates and easily customizable software.

The Nexus 4, Google’s current Nexus smartphone has an 8MP rear camera and is backed by a powerful Camera app and a feature called Photo Sphere which allows users to take 360 degree photos.

Google will likely build on the software and hardware of the Nexus 4 but it’s unclear if Gundotra’s comments refer to the upcoming 2013 Nexus or other Nexus smartphones of the future.
