Samsung Announces WiFi Galaxy Camera

Published

on

On the heels of HTC’s UltraPixel and Zoe Camera announcement on the new flagship HTC One smartphone, Samsung is making the WiFi-only edition of the Galaxy Camera official. The Galaxy Camera is an Android-powered camera that has many of the internal guts of the flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone, but with attention to the camera with a 21X optical zoom and a 16-megapixel sensor. Currently only available in 3G or 4G versions (HSPA+ on AT&T in the U.S. and LTE with Verizon Wireless), Samsung is hoping to bring the price down with the WiFi-only version by eschewing the mobile broadband radios and antennas.

The device will come with 1 GB RAM, 8 GB storage with a micro SD card slot to increase storage capacity, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and a 23 mm wide angle lens.

Taking professional-looking images is made easy with 19 different integrated Smart Modes, which allow users to choose from a series of preset scenario options such as Light trace or Action freeze to ensure the perfect shot is captured every time.

Pricing and availability information is currently not yet available for the Galaxy Camera with WiFi. As the version with mobile broadband retails for just $500 on AT&T sans contract, we can expect to see the WiFi-only model to be priced for less, perhaps around the $400 price point. As the Galaxy Camera with WiFi and 3G is available in four colors–black, white, orange, and pink–it’s unclear if the WiFi-only variant will appear in as many color variants.

Most of the specs of the Galaxy Camera remain the same. With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board, users have the convenience to choose their favorite photo and video editing apps from Google’s Play Store. Additionally, sharing should be made easy with dedicated apps to Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and Instagram. A quad-core CPU powers the whole rig while the large 4.8-inch 720p HD LCD touchscreen display helps make previewing your images easy as most cameras top out with a 3-inch display.
