Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich Update Takes New Twist

Published

on

Earlier in the year, one of HTC’s missing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates, the HTC ThunderBolt ICS update, rolled out to owners of the aging device. That left one update, the Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich update missing and unfortunately, even now, six months later, owners are seeing two sides to the story.

Back in August, HTC delayed both the HTC ThunderBolt and Droid Incredible 2 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates. The manufacturer has said that the delays were due to connectivity issues.

The Droid Incredible 2 ICS update still hasn't rolled out.

The Droid Incredible 2 ICS update still hasn’t rolled out.

In late January, Verizon finally approved the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update for roll out and in early February, the ThunderBolt ICS update finally rolled out, many months after it was first promised. However, the Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich update did not roll out and since then, there hasn’t been any sign of delayed update.

Over the weekend though, Droid Incredible 2 owners were treated to two completely different responses, both from credible sources, about the whereabouts of the update.

The first, came from HTC USA’s Twitter account in response to an inquiry about the missing update. An owner, asking about the release date for the Droid Incredible 2’s ICS update was given a typical response from HTC, one that states that the company will inform owners of a release date when it’s “closer to final software availability for the Inc 2.” The company thanked the owner for his patience.

This was a much different response than the one given to another inquiring Droid Incredible 2 owner who instead of asking HTC directly, asked noted HTC leakster @LlabTooFeR about the whereabouts of the update. The person behind this account has been accurate in the past about HTC updates.

In response to a question asking when the update might be out, @LlabTooFeR responded with a rather cryptic response saying that it “won’t get any new update.” Again, while not confirmation of the Droid Incredible 2’s fate, it’s a sign that there is still a possibility that this update, which hasn’t been cancelled, might never roll out to users.

It should also be noted that HTC ThunderBolt owners have had mixed reviews in regards to the Ice Cream Sandwich update, something that could potentially motivate HTC and Verizon, especially Verizon, to cancel the update.

Until either one of them gives confirmation though, the update’s status remains completely up in the air, though at this point, users shouldn’t be shocked if HTC and Verizon ultimately end up canning Ice Cream Sandwich for the aging Droid Incredible 2.

Thank you for keeping up with this story. I am an Incredible 2 owner who is still waiting for ICS. More importantly, it is a story about a company who has been unable to deliver on it’s promise. Thank you for keeping HTC accountable for it’s actions.

What sort of problems have Thunderbolt owners had with the upgrade (“It should also be noted that HTC ThunderBolt owners have had mixed reviews in regards to the Ice Cream Sandwich update”)?

I love my HTC inc 2, but due to HTC keeping everyone in the dark I will be moving on to Samsung next month when I get to upgrade.

HTC is a great platform but their service to their customers sucks.

If I upgrade, it will either be to go prepaid or to another provider. I refuse to switch my Verizon plan to their new unlimited which I have no use for and which cost me an extra $70 a month with my 3 Smartphones and one plain phone on my family plan. And I certainly refuse to spend $600 for a new phone so I can keep my Verizon plan.

If you are comfortable with Computers and phones then just root it. I recently rooted and have found it to be the perfect solution. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931096 just follow this guide to the letter. If you are using Gingerbread 2.3.4 don’t use the super user posted in that tutorial though, get the earlier super user released for Gingerbread. You can after the root either flash a new rom or just customize the heck out of Gingerbread and freeze or uninstall the stock apps you dont use. Most dinc 2 are out of warranty time anyway, so whats to lose.

I have but 3 months on my current Verizon Contract. They can all blame a variety of reasons why the Incredible 2 Does not, or will not have ICS. I don’t care anymore HTC & Verizon are to blame in my book. And I am personally planning on leaveing both. It is inexcusable to fail your paying consumer like this. Especially when they don’t have but few “more money out of pocket” options. I’ve heard of the Rooting solution, but if my phone gets bricked, who’s going to buy me the new one? certainly not Verizon or HTC.

I contacted HTC today and they stated that it is scrapped. Rep said they had it ready and it was scrapped last minute because they said the processor cannot handle ICS. Interesting, since there are ICS custom roms available that run perfectly well on the device.

I would never buy another HTC product again, their complete lack of support and the constant freezeups and lags on this thing is unacceptable. I cant wait to get off verizon as well.
