AT&T One X Jelly Bean Update Embarrassed by Mid-Range Competition

Published

on

Tonight, Verizon rolled out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to its mid-range Samsung Galaxy Stellar, a device that launched in September of last year, which means that once again, AT&T’s flagship from last year, the HTC One X, has been beaten to Jelly Bean by a device without a big name.

Verizon has confirmed that the Android 4.1 roll out for the Samsung Galaxy Stellar has begun and that the update will be rolling out to Galaxy Stellar owners over the course of the next few days. Verizon typically updates its devices in phases which means that the update rolls out in a staggered manner. While some Galaxy Stellar owners may see the update tonight, others may not see it arrive for a few days.

This is a big update for Galaxy Stellar owners as it takes the device from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Android 4.1 brings a number of new features including quicker user interface, Google Now which can predict things like traffic in travel routes before users even leave the house, improved Calendar and Browser apps and a whole lot more.

Those who are interested in installing the update will want to check within the device’s Settings, in the About section. If the update is available, it will prompt after checking for the new software.

While that is a big story, there is an even bigger story at play here. What this roll out means is that AT&T’s flagship smartphone from mid-2012, the HTC One X, has been beaten to Jelly Bean. In fact, given the stature of the Samsung Galaxy Stellar and the fact that Verizon is notoriously slow at rolling out Android updates, this is a new low for both AT&T and the HTC One X which remains on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Making matters worse is that the HTC One X originally got the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update back in August. Carriers, including those in Canada, have subsequently updated their versions of the One X, however, for whatever reason, AT&T has kept the device on Android 4.0.

With the HTC One arriving later this month with Android 4.1, and the HTC One X+ already on Android 4.1, it will be interesting to see how long it takes AT&T to get its original One device upgraded to a piece of software that has already been surpassed by Android 4.2.

And AT#T has the nerve to ask me why I’m leaving their company! I would’ve stayed, if they took care of current customers!

To be fair, there’s nothing wrong with HTC. The update has been available for quite some time and other companies have received the update on the One X. AT&T is the one that hasn’t released it yet. Don’t give up hope for HTC. I love their One series.

ATT&T sent me a survey (about customer service) via text. I was in shock. Did you not see my post on your twitter, facebook? The funny thing was when I bought the phone in August, the rep told me that the upgrade would be out soon. I chose to go with the HTC instead of the Galaxy. Was it a mistake? No, I truly enjoy the HTC and all it offers, but this is beyond ridiculousness. At least set some expectation for the customers.

Definitely considering early termination and eating the fee.
