Get the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAXX Jelly Bean Update Right Now

Published

on

Earlier today, it became clear that the Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX Jelly Bean updates, which prematurely arrived back on Christmas Eve, had begun rolling out to soak test participants ahead of the full public release. However, it’s now rolling out to the public and those who don’t wish to wait and want to get the software up and running right now, have the opportunity to do so.

Back in December, Motorola and Verizon prematurely rolled out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for both the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX. The update, which was halted after being available for a few hours, was then announced for a first quarter roll out, meaning that Motorola and Verizon set a deadline for the end of March.

Fortunately, it appears that they are prepared to roll the updates out well ahead of that deadline as both the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates emerged for soak testers today. Soak testers are the last line before the updates roll out to the general public. They ensure that the update is ready to roll out, which, in most cases, it is.

What this means is that the updates that rolled out today to Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX soak testers today, are likely the updates that have rolled out to owners today. Unfortunately, often, Verizon rolls these updates out in phases which means that it can take several days to arrive. Thanks to the folks at DroidRzr, XDA-Forums, and Droid-Life, this means that the updates can be pulled and installed today for those that are willing to jump in head first.

Those who aren’t adept at manually installing software files are likely going to want to avoid the process and instead, wait for the OTA update to roll out from Verizon. That’s a much easier, much safer process.

However, those who don’t want to wait and want to get the update right now on either the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAXX can now do so.

First things first. Owners will need to figure out if they are running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update from Christmas Eve.

Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX owners running Android 4.1 from Christmas, which is build 98.72.8, will want to download a 40MB file to get to build 98.72.16. The device does not need to be rooted for this to work and it will take a few more steps beyond downloading it to get it to work.

After downloading that file to external storage, say an SD card, owners will need to boot into Recovery. To get there, turn the phone off and hold down both Volume Down and Volume Up buttons plus the Power button. Once in the menu, select Recovery. Once an exclamation point appears, hold down the Volume Up and Down buttons.

Once in Recovery, users will need to select the “Apply update from external storage” and choose the file. The update will then install and the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAXX will be up and running with the appropriate version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX Jelly Bean updates are now available.

Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX owners running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, build 6.16.211, will want to download a much larger 338MB file. Again, the device does not need to be rooted. S

Same instructions here. After downloading the file to external storage, owners will need to boot into Recovery.

The update will then install and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be replaced with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

For those that don’t wish to go this route, the OTA should emerge from the shadows in the days or weeks ahead, but for those that wish to get rid of those Motorola apps, it’s possible to do so.

      Should the files stay compressed?

Link to the larger file is not working, due to bandwidth limits from the file sharing source it looks like.

I answered my own question. Yes, leave the file compressed and move to sd card. I’ll post an update once this completes.

Everything seems to be fine. No real noticeable change from the December push. I had read on another site that My Gallery was gone but I still have it, possibly due to this being an upgrade and not a clean install. Thanks for the info and providing the links. Everything worked fine.

The link to 338MB file yields a 403 permissions error. Is the site preventing phones from downloading directly to encourage download from laptops/computers? Beed this fixed asap. Thanks!

may just be because I’m a day late, but I was able to update straight from ics to jellybean just by going into about phone and checking for a system update. It brought up the download for 98.72.16 which is downloading now off the phone. No connection to my computer
