HTC Incredible S Jelly Bean Update Appears Unlikely

Published

HTC Incredible S owners who might be holding out for an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will want to temper their expectations as the device has been pegged to remain on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the software that arrived for it all the way back in July of last year.

In July, after a lengthy wait, HTC rolled out Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the HTC Incredible S, bringing the device up from its previous operating system, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The update was a huge upgrade over Android 2.3 as it overhauled the software interface, introduced a new Camera application, simpler multitasking, improved widgets and a whole lot more.

The HTC Incredible S won't likely get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The HTC Incredible S won’t likely get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Suffice to say, from a feature standpoint, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was a big upgrade to those toting the HTC Incredible S. Unfortunately, it looks like the HTC Incredible S will be staying on Android 4.0 ICS as a noted HTC leakster has said that HTC has no plans to upgrade the aging device with a new operating system.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is Google’s latest piece of mobile software and it has rolled out to many devices over the past few months including the HTC One X, HTC One SV and non-HTC phones including the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S2, which, like the HTC Incredible S, was released for carriers in 2011.

However, despite the HTC Incredible S being just two years old, the device will evidently not be getting Jelly Bean according to @LlabTooFeR who has been accurate with HTC Android update information in the past.

This should come as no surprise to owners of the aging device as the HTC One X was only just recently updated to Android 4.1 and many other devices from 2011, including the HTC Rezound, are said to not be getting Jelly Bean updates. HTC hasn’t said whether or not the HTC Incredible S will stay on Android 4.0, and it likely won’t. We’ve reached out for comment but haven’t heard back.

This doesn’t bode well for Droid Incredible 2 owners on Verizon either. The Droid Incredible 2 is the United States’ version of the Incredible S and unlike the HTC Incredible S, it’s still stuck on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with  Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update delayed since August.

There are rumors that the Droid Incredible 2 will never get Android 4.0, despite HTC’s promises, but HTC still hasn’t cancelled the roll out.
