HTC One Developer Edition Arriving Soon After Release for $649

Published

The HTC One release date is delayed, but that isn’t stopping HTC from announcing the developer version of the HTC One.

This special version of the HTC One is aimed at developers, but it is also a good deal for users who want to pick up the HTC One without restrictions on carriers or the bootloader.

On the HTC Blog this morning HTC announced the HTC One Developer Edition, a sim and bootloader unlocked version of the all metal HTC One that allows developers and power users to load custom software on the device without waiting for hacks to unlock a bootloader.

HTC One vs. iPhone 5 Design

The HTC One Developer Edition is coming soon.

The Developer Edition is not available on a contract with any carrier, so the price is higher than users will find with a two-year contract at AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile. Additionally this model only supports the following frequencies.

  • HSPA/WCDMA: 850/1900/2100 MHz
  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
  • LTE: 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz (US)

This means there’s no support for AWS HSPA/WCDMA, which means this isn’t a good fit for users who want to use the phone on T-Mobile. The developer edition supports T-Mobile LTE, but not the rest of the network.

The rest of the HTC One Developer Edition specs look in line with the device that should hit carriers in the U.S. soon.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 64 GB of storage
  • SIM and bootloader unlocked
  • Open APIs for Bluetooth Low Energy, Infrared, and more
  • Front-facing stereo speakers
  • Two dual-membrane microphones for recording

HTC is only offering the HTC One Developer Edition to U.S. users at the start of the roll out. The pricing is attractive at $649 for a 64GB version. This is $200 cheaper than an off-contract iPhone 5. It is slightly more expensive than the Droid RAZR HD Developer Edition which retails for $599.

The Developer Edition will roll out shortly after the retail HTC One release date in the U.S. There is no word on an official HTC One release for AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint at this time. We’ve heard that HTC is delaying the HTC One release in some areas, possibly due to shortages in UltraPixel camera components. The HTC One will arrive in select countries on March 29th, and others in April.
