Verizon Wireless, with its over 400 4G LTE markets, remains king of the high-speed data world. However, AT&T has been making inroads, launching its growing 4G LTE network in a number of new areas to start the year, pushing towards the 200 4G LTE market mark. Its growing size, the fact that it still allows grandfathered smartphone owners to keep their unlimited plans and a stellar lineup of smartphones make it an enticing destination for those looking to get a new smartphone.

Thus far, phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S, two phones that will likely come to AT&T, are two intriguing options that have emerged in the first part of 2013. However, both devices are likely months away from hitting shelves and for many, waiting is impossible. Those with a broken smartphone that need to upgrade now are looking. Those who may have some extra money to spend might be looking. And those who have come to the end of a contract and don’t necessarily need the latest and greatest might be looking as well.

Fortunately, for those looking for a new device on AT&T, the carrier has an extremely large lineup of devices. Unfortunately, that means that picking a smartphone could be a bit of a hassle for those looking for a new smartphone this month.

In an attempt to make things easier for shoppers, here are our picks for the five best AT&T smartphones available for the month of March, 2013.

Apple's most current iPhone features an industrial design complete with aluminum back, iOS 6, a stellar camera and an ageless 4-inch Retina Display and 4G LTE speeds which make it one of the most capable smartphones on the market. Apple also tends to keep its devices updated with the latest software meaning users don't have to worry when signing a new two year contract.

The price of the iPhone 5 likely won't change until the iPhone 5S arrives which means that buyers will have to purchase it for $199.99 or more on-contract.

I know it sounds ancient lol but I like the flip phones still because I don’t have to worry about the screen cracking if I accidentally drop though I do also like the touch screen smart phones, if the company could make a sliding cover for it or something like a small notepad cover so that all sides of phone would be protected. Am I behind on this idea?
