If you only look at one photo from the Samsung Galaxy S4 launch, make it this photo of the Samsung Galaxy S4 next to what are consistently the best smartphones available on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.

The new Samsung Galaxy S4 delivers a 5-inch 1080P HD display that is bigger than almost all of these phones, but despite the larger display it is not significantly bigger than the rest of the smartphones on the market.

In the image below we compare the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the Nexus 4, iPhone 5, Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy S3. The only phone we don’t have here is the HTC One.

For comparison sake, here are the measurements for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the other smartphones in the comparison photo.

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 – 5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 inches (4.59 ounces)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2 – 5.94 x 3.17 x 0.37 inches (6.42 ounces)
  • LG Nexus 4 – 5.27 x 2.70 x 0.36 inches (4.9 ounces)
  • iPhone 5 – 4.87 x 2.31 0.30 inches (3.95 ounces)
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 – 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches (4.69 ounces)

The iPhone 5 is still the lightest, smallest, thinnest phone in the bunch, but Samsung is able to deliver an impressively small package for a phone with a 5-inch display. The photo below shows a comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S4 thickness compared to the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Display Size and Resolution

The Samsung Galaxy S4 features a 5-inch 1080 P HD display that delivers a higher resolution than any of the phones on this table and is the second largest in the group.

While the Galaxy S4 is only slightly larger than the Galaxy S3 and Nexus 4, users see the biggest jump when comparing the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 displays. The extra inch of screen real estate delivers enough room to use two apps on the same screen at one time. The Galaxy Note 2 was the first Samsung phone with Multi-Window View, but it is a standard Galaxy S4 feature.

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 – 5-inch, 1920 x 1080, 441 ppi
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2 – 5.5-inch, 1280 x 720, 265 ppi
  • LG Nexus 4 – 4.7-inch, 1280 x 768, 320 ppi
  • iPhone 5 – 4-inch, 1136 x 640, 326 ppi
  • Samsung Galaxy S3 – 4.8-inch, 1280 x 720, 306 ppi

Based on our hands on time with the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, iPhone 5, Galaxy Note 2 and Nexus 4 we can comfortably say that each of these phones delivers a very good screen experience. The high ppi on each device delivers crisp looking text and great looking video. While the Samsung Galaxy S4 display may not be as bright as some of the competition, the screen is quite nice to look at.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 delivers a 1080P HD resolution that’s the same as you’ll find on your HDTV. The rest of the Android phones offer a 720P HD experience, or similar. The iPhone 5 uses a less standard 1136 x 640 resolution which may lead to some letter boxing.

After the S4 event I went and bought a Note 2. Nothing compares, or holds as much resale value. When the Note 3 arrives, I’ll be able to sell the Note 2 for enough to get one.
