Published

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon who haven’t yet received the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update should not be panicking as the software is still rolling out and will be rolling out to owners over the next six days or so.

Earlier this week, after a bit of a wait, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus finally got its update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, Google’s latest Android software and an update that first arrived for Nexus devices all the way back in November. The update also rolled out on the Sprint Galaxy Nexus and the Asus Transformer Pad 300 prior to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus getting it.

After a few days though, users of the Galaxy Nexus (myself included) have been wondering where the update might be as it has been moving out relatively slowly.

Verizon has let us know that the update will be rolling out over a 10 day period from the first day that it started pushing out. That means that the carrier expects all owners to have the software by the end of next week. Of course, that’s not the ideal situation for those that have been waiting for what seems like forever for the update to arrive but that’s how Verizon roll outs generally work so Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners will want to remain patient.

Once the update does arrive it will prompt for a download and an install. The update is about 85MB in size which means that it won’t take up a substantial amount of time to get up and running but owners will want to set aside a few minutes to get it going.

There are methods for those that don’t wish to wait of course. Users can try the Google Framework Services trick and there is also a manual installation method for those that wish to upgrade ahead of the OTA.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus is the last Nexus in the U.S to get the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update which contains, among other things, Photo Sphere, gesture-enhanced keyboard, Quick Settings, lock screen widgets and more.

You get me every time with your galaxy Nexus posts, then I’m disappointed when most of the content is a re-hash of your previous articles. Since you’re a real reporter, and not just a blogger like me, it would be cool if you could report on why the Nexus Galaxy battery life is abysmal after the Jelly Bean update. I love my Nexus, and I love Android, but damn, the battery life almost makes me want an iPhone.

Having this same problem Leo. Wow…battery life is awful, phone is taking forever to charge up, and antenna reception display is worse than before.

Can a flashed phone still get the update?

Adam, just read this from you and did the framework services thing and it worked this time. Took some panaramic photos of my kids and they love it.

Worse than a rehashed article is yet another complaint about the battery life of the GN and a pseudo threat to jump over to Apple. As if any reporter would waste time researching that ‘hot topic’.

JR, this is a real issue with the 4.2.2 update. 4.1.1 did not have this battery life issue. My phone now takes much longer to charge and the battery life is draining much faster than before. I love my phone and I’m not threatening to jump to Apple. What’s disappointing is Verizon taking so long to test the update and yet still we have an obvious glitch that should have been detected over the past few months.

I haven’t seen any difference in battery life after the 4.2.2 update. So, for me, the battery life issue is old news for this phone (and to be fair, many others). If you plan to spend time on it, the only solution is to install the extended battery and plan to plug it in at home, at the office, in the car…….. Should we really expect an OS update to solve this problem? I personally don’t think so. But I could be wrong.

BTW, I do like the 4.2.2 update. However, it seems to work much nicer on the Nexus 10. I can’t quite put my finger on why at this point, but it just seems more buttery on the 10. Anybody able to contrast the two?

You are wrong, yes. I’ve had this phone for 15 months and am quite aware of its capability under daily use re: battery life. This is a new issue that happens to be similar to an old issue.

I never had this bad a problem with my battery when I first got my phone. The 4.1 update fixed the battery issue. I’ve always used nothing but the extended battery. Now the battery drains very quickly and takes a much longer time to charge than before. Obviously it isn’t affecting you, but it is affecting some of us. And yes, definitely requires some type of update to fix.

I’ve had the update since Monday the 1st day it rolled out (luckily) and i’ve had time to test it and put it to its paces. Honestly speaking i love alot of new improvments but the battery life sucks now 3 and a half hours and then dead on low usage so ive been reading online and they said do a factory reset so lets see if that works

Did it work? I’m having the exact same problem. Also, is your phone now getting very hot at the top? Near the camera.

Since the update yesterday morning my phone has drained and shut down 3 times. I have NEVER had this kind of battery trouble with my GN. And yesterday was Saturday (light use day for my phone). I’m scared to see what Monday will bring when I’m actually using it all day.

I was having that kind of battery trouble before the update, mainly from heavy use. I wonder if excess use because of excitement over the new update is what’s causing your battery “issues.” I solved this problem by buying a 3800 mha extended battery off Amazon this past week. Yeah, it’s a little bulkier, but it feels like I won’t drop it as easily now because it isn’t so light, and my battery lasts quite literally twice as long. It’s wonderful.

Complaints about battery to me are pretty arbitrary. There’s only so far software updates can go to make battery use more efficient. The stark reality is that battery technology is far behind the technology that uses it. You should continue to expect to need backup batteries or a place to charge throughout the day until we break out of the lithium-ion funk we’re stuck in.

      03/24/2013 at 1:12 pm

Not arbitrary. I have not used the phone any more lately than normal. Battery life is much worse and charging is taking longer. This is a new, unique issue affecting some of us.

I have always used an extended battery with this phone. This is a noticeable change under the same usage pattern.

Doug, there is no way this problem is NOT related to the upgrade. My upgrade was on a weekend, which is a low use time for my phone. On a normal use day, I get hours of use (calls, texting and data). Now, my phone is dying within an hour with NO use. Also, I’m even losing battery power WHILE PLUGGED UP. My battery is discharging while connected.
Also, my phone is now hot to the touch.
After a year with this phone, I’m confident I know the difference between normal battery life and this new battery late (or lack of).
We need to call Verizon and complain so they can track this. When I called they said that they were not aware of this issue. Hmmmmm….

Hey, JR. Sorry I have an opinion and dared to type “Apple.” I do not want an iPhone, but my girlfriend and daughter have no issue whatsoever with battery life with theirs. The battery life with 4.2.2 is significantly worse. My battery is gone in less than 6 hours with very light use. That’s pretty bad, and yes, worth some query by the “press.”

I just got the update this weekend. Love the new look and feel. As to the battery life…. After sitting on the desk for 3.5 hours it will go dead. The phone gets extremely hot and the battery drains almost as fast as it charges. It seems like there is a process running away and Verizon should have done a few more months of testing…. My recommendation is to not install it.

I guess I should feel lucky then…I am having no new battery issues…battery is not taking longer to charge nor is it draining any faster than before. And no added heat from use or sitting idle.

It always amazes how there are so many differences in how these devices act up. Seems to be the same story on the Nexus 10. Many people still complain about the random reboot issues, but the 4.2.2 update seems to have totally fixed that problem on mine.

I just have to add I’m having the same batter and heat near the top issue. Much different and much hotter. I have an uber large capacity battery and my phone is down to 52% in just 1.5 hours with 1/2 hour spent on a call and the phone pretty much not active besides. I used to go all day and have 40% left. Just installed the update yesterday.

On a different note, those who have the 3800mah battery, where’d you get it and what cases work for it? I like my Incipio case which works with the “original” extended battery, which I think is a 2800 or 2100 mah.

here’s an odd thing. I tried restarting my phone last night, it said “Upgrading Android…” (this is after the upgrade) and now the battery life is a little better. Possible they are doing an OTA patch…?

As an update, I uninstalled my exchange server program and my exchange server account then reinstalled both. Problem seems to be solved. (And “batter” up above is a badly typed battery.

I read that the massive battery drain is from Exchange email accounts. Try deleting and readding the Exchange email, if that is in fact your problem. I read that fixes the battery drain.

That said, I am still waiting for my update to push through.

      03/25/2013 at 10:06 am

I would, except I’d need admins at work to reinstall it and they take forever. Wonder why Exchange accounts of all things?

Another quirk in 4.2.2… probably missed something here and haven’t found a pattern, but why is the hour marker on the clock, in the lock screen, sometimes displayed in bold face and sometimes not…?

Wanted to follow up here. I got the pushed OTA update last night and so far, I have not noticed a change in the battery usage. I also do not use an Exchange account on my Nexus. I had heard Maps was giving people the same issue, but I use it with Google Now and haven’t seen a problem. Result may vary, obviously. Just wanted to report.

Tried to delete and re-add account, but Exchange Service was still using 47% of battery life, even after I deleted the Exchange account. Only resolution for me was to do a factory reset. Not only did it take care of the battery issue, my phone responds much better than before the reset.

I had the exchange problem, too, but deleting and adding back the account fixed it. My battery life is still woeful. Based on how fast it drains doing nothing (15% in 30 min), I’m looking at 3:20 on a full charge. Unacceptable.

O.k. I just got the GN two days ago. And I love it. But it gets really hot when I’m on it for more that three min. WTF. I’ve never had a phone do that. Should I be concerned? And in regards to the update, after reading what most have said I’m afraid to do it. Do you have to update and if I decide not to is there a way to stop the pop up?

  20. Frank

    04/21/2013 at 1:06 pm

karen, go to settings and check the version of Android you have. you should have 4.2.2 if you just got the phone 3 days ago. if you do, and you’re having an issue w the battery being too hot, take it to Verizon and ask them what that’s all about. Not sure if others have had the same issue after the update but you just got your phone out of the box 3 days ago so Verizon should be good about troubleshooting.
