LG Optimus G2 Might Use Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Chip

The rumored LG Optimus G2 may use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, which could make it one of the fastest smartphones ever.

As spotted by Unwired View, benchmarks of an unannounced LG D801 show a phone that appears to use a MSM8974 Qualcomm¬†Snapdragon 800 processor. LG hasn’t announced a phone with the D801 product number, so there’s a chance the phone is the alleged Optimus G2. It’s possible that LG’s recent Optimus G Pro isn’t the same as the rumored Optimus G2.

Benchmarks for the unannounced phone that appears to use the Snapdragon 800 processor and Adreno 330 GPU completely blow away benchmarks from current generation devices. In two GLBenchmark 2.7 T-Rex HD tests the LG D801 scores much higher than Apple’s iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. The smartphone even surpasses the current generation iPad (sometimes called the iPad 4) handily.

An alleged spec sheet for the rumored LG Optimus G2 shows that the phone has a 1080p display and it runs Android 4.2.2. There’s no mention of the size of the screen on the LG D801, though many recent 1080p smartphone start at 4.7-inches like the HTC One and hover around 5-inches, like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z.

If the LG Optimus G2, or whatever the company will call the LG D801, does use the new Snapdragon 800 processor, it will likely be among the first smartphones to use it. Qualcomm announced the phone at CES in January, but it won’t ship until later this year.

When it does arrive in smartphones, the Snapdragon 800 will likely be the fastest smartphone processor on the market, though NVIDIA may claim that spot with the Tegra 4. In addition to its speed, the processor has features such as always-on voice recognition and the ability to charge smartphone batteries faster.

Other recent rumors said a version of the Motorola X Phone may also use the Snapdragon 800 processor. If true, that phone, as well as this rumored LG Optimus G2, likely won’t come to market until later this year.
