Facebook Home Coming Soon for HTC Myst, Other Android Phones

A leaked android application package (APK) of the new Facebook app for Android shows the specs of the phone Facebook Home will release on, along with a few other hints at its functionality.

Code in the leaked APK obtained by Android Police shows it will come to an HTC phone called the HTC Myst. The phone will likely come to stores under a different name, however. The HTC Myst recently passed through the FCC with support for AT&T 4G LTE, so there’s a chance the phone will come out very soon.

The leak says the HTC Myst uses a 4.3-inch 720p display and a dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor. The phone will likely have a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera and 1GB of RAM. The HTC Myst will likely ship with Android 4.1.2 and HTC Sense 4.5 instead of the Sense 5 found on the HTC One.

Facebook Home leak

Code in the leaked ROM for the HTC Myst hints at a new Facebook app, which is likely Facebook Home. Unfortunately Android Police wasn’t able to launch Facebook Home due to some missing pieces of code, but there’s enough to prove that Facebook Home will replace the homescreen or launcher on Android phones like the HTC Myst.

There are also hints that Facebook Home will work with Sense 5, Samsung’s TouchWiz and stock Android, hinting that Facebook’s launcher may work on a number of devices.

Android Police found a number of icons in the leak that will replace some Android icons or just add to the homescreen. These include a new app icon, a new compose button (presumably for instant status updates or messages), a new settings icon and a custom Google icon. There isn’t much to suggest a complete overhaul of Android, however, just a slight redesign with the News Feed built into one screen.

There’s also a hint of a new app called “Chat Heads,” which looks like an always-on Facebook Messenger. From the description it sounds like users can use Chat Heads to talk to their friends in any app without switching to Messenger. That could be wrong, however, as the feature isn’t too clear.

Facebook will formally announce Facebook Home and any other plans for its “new home on Android” this Thursday, April 4.
