Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Release Date, Specs, News and Rumors

on

In late 2012, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 arrived in the United States to replace the original Samsung Galaxy Note which had arrived earlier in the year. With only a few months under its belt, there is already talk of a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 successor in the form of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a device that is rumored to be out sometime later this year.

In 2011, Samsung launched the original Samsung Galaxy Note to a crowd of skeptics. The device, which featured a much larger screen than devices like the iPhone, also featured a stylus, something that many had written off as a useful, daily accessory for smartphone owners. Needless to say, critics and consumers were a little apprehensive towards the idea.

While it's early in 2013, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has already emerged in several rumors.

While it’s early in 2013, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has already emerged in several rumors.

By the time the AT&T Galaxy Note model arrived in early 2012 though, it was clear that Samsung had a bit of a hit on its hands and a nice compliment to the Samsung Galaxy S series which Samsung has touted as its flagship. In the U.S. though, the device only arrived on AT&T and later, on T-Mobile, leaving customers waiting for arrivals on other carriers like Sprint and Verizon.

Later in the year, the Galaxy Note series followed in the path of the Samsung Galaxy S series and arrived on multiple carriers in the U.S. The Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the most current Galaxy Note, is currently available on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon, far more carriers than the original.

However, despite only being out a few months, the Galaxy Note 2 is already rumored to be getting replaced. Rumors of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 have sprouted up already, months ahead a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 launch. The early timing is something that we saw with the Samsung Galaxy S4, and the success of the past two Galaxy Note models is likely to blame.

Even though it’s extremely early in the year, already, we’ve heard a number of rumors about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Quite a bit actually, Here now, we delve into everything we’ve heard so far about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, its release date, its features and more.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Release Date

Maybe the most sought after piece of information in regards to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and really any rumored device, is the release date. With it being so early in the year, we still haven’t heard anything specific about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date. However, we have heard quite a bit about the Galaxy Note 3 launch date.

In the past, Samsung has used the attention of the IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany to announce its Samsung Galaxy Note models. It did so with the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Note 2. This year, IFA 2013 is scheduled to be taking place during the first part of September, September 6th to the 11th, and already, rumors suggest that Samsung will use IFA as a launching pad.

The Galaxy Note 3 could arrive before or during IFA 2013.

The Galaxy Note 3 could arrive before or during IFA 2013.

The most recent rumor suggests that Samsung is planning a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 successor for September. No specific dates have been suggested but it’s likely that the Galaxy Note 3 would be announced at an Unpacked event, prior to the kick off of IFA. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Unpacked event was Episode 1 of 2013, so Episode 2 could very well be for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

At this point, based on the rumors and the past, September 1st through September 5th are looking like the best possibilities for a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launch date.

In the United States, this could mean a release similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. In the U.S., despite being announced in August, the Galaxy Note 2 arrived during October and November with the latest arrival the Verizon Galaxy Note 2 which touched down on November 29th.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Design

So far, we haven’t heard anything about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 design nor have we seen any suspected leaks. This is normal as Samsung typically keeps its device designs closely guarded in the months ahead of their launch.

This year, we caught glimpses of the Samsung Galaxy S4 prior to its launch, but only a couple of days before the actual launch event. In the months preceding the announcement, we saw a number of fakes emerge.

As we have theorized, based on the Samsung Galaxy S4 design, Samsung will likely opt to use its familiar plastic design with the Galaxy Note 3, and possibly make some tweaks to its design like it did with the Galaxy S4.

Two possible tweaks include making the Galaxy Note 3 slimmer than the Galaxy Note 2 and also, making it more lightweight. One of the bigger drawbacks of the Galaxy Note 2 is its 180 grams weight, which is about 70 grams heavier than the iPhone 5.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Display

The Galaxy Note 3 could have a 1080p display, like the Galaxy S4.

The Galaxy Note 3 could have a 1080p display, like the Galaxy S4.

One of the more unique aspects about the Samsung Galaxy Note series is the screen size. Instead of a typical 5-inch or below display size, the Samsung Galaxy Note series features massive displays. The original Galaxy Note, for example, had a 5.3-inch display while the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 received a boost up to 5.5-inches. And while a massive Galaxy Note 3 display is expected, we still don’t have a bead on just how big it might be.

Early rumors in regards to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 suggested that the device would either have a 6.3-inch display or a 5.9-inch display, the latter of which brought to the surface by Korea Times. However, recent developments have thrown a wrench into those rumors as Samsung is reportedly planning launches of two, lower-end devices with screen sizes of 5.8 and 6.3-inches.

According to leaks from SamMobile, Samsung is gearing up to release two devices called the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8. The devices will be using dual-core processors, sport 8MP cameras, and the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is said to have a 7.9mm design, just like the Galaxy S4.

While these aren’t confirmed yet, they appear likely as they have been rumored for quite some time, originally under the name Galaxy Fonblet. If these screen sizes are accurate, it’s unclear where they leave the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 display that was thought to be of equal size.

Perhaps, Samsung keeps the device at 5.5-inches, something that we have suggested is possible. Also possible is a flexible, unbreakable display, something that we saw Samsung unleash at CES 2013.

At CES 2013, Samsung once again showed off its Samsung Youm flexible OLED technology that will almost certainly be implemented into some of Samsung’s future smartphones. And according to Asiae, the first device to receive this type of display will be the Galaxy Note 3.

In 2012, we heard that it might be coming on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, but that didn’t materialize, but because Samsung debuted it at CES alongside the Exynos 5 Octa processor, which will be coming on the Galaxy S4, there is more of a chance of this rumor happening with the Galaxy Note 3.

Like the Galaxy S4 display, the Galaxy Note 3 display is said to feature 1080p resolution, a feature that is coming on a vast majority of Android smartphones this year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Camera

From the Samsung Galaxy Note to the Galaxy Note 2, the change in camera quality was virtually unnoticeable. Both featured 8MP cameras with a fantastic camera application from Samsung. Both led to good, solid photos and video. However, as we saw with the Galaxy S4, Samsung is stepping up its camera game and it could be doing similar with the Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 features a 13MP rear facing camera.

The Galaxy Note 3 could opt for a 13MP camera like the Galaxy S4.

Unfortunately, no rumors have sprouted up just yet but we expect Samsung to include a much improved camera over the Galaxy Note 2, possibly the same 13MP sensor found in the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Specs

Because it’s so early in the year, many of the smaller details regarding the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 remain missing. However, there is one big feature that keeps popping up time and time again in rumors and has seemingly been cleared for arrival in the Galaxy Note 3.

Rumors have virtually all agreed that Samsung is preparing to release the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with the Exynos 5 Octa octo-core processor, the same processor that was announced alongside Samsung Youm and a processor that will be put inside some Galaxy S4 variants.

https://youtu.be/6zC9-3nO-1U

The processor, which is marketed as an octo-core processor but can only use four cores at a time, should bring enhanced performance and battery life to the Galaxy S4 and we imagine it would bring the same to the Galaxy Note 3.

And while we still don’t know much about the other specifications, the Galaxy S4 may have revealed some of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 plans. For one, the Galaxy S4 features wireless charging thanks to a removable back. So, it could be that the Galaxy Note 3 also has this type of support. We also saw Samsung include a microSD card slot on the Galaxy S4, and we imagine it will do the same with the Galaxy Note 3.

Storage options remain similar which means that we should see 16GB, 32GB and 64GB Galaxy Note 3 variants arrive later this year as well.

Rumors have suggested that the Galaxy Note 3 could feature an improved S Pen as well, though it’s unclear if the device itself would change. Instead, rumors have put fourth the idea of a Sharp LCD display for the Galaxy Note 3, something that could potentially improve the experience with the Galaxy Note 3′s S Pen.

At CES 2013, Sharp told us that its IGZO LCD displays, which have been rumored for the iPhone and iPad, will provide not only better looking displays, but fantastic battery life, and better touch support, something that the Galaxy Note 3 and the S Pen rely on. The rumor did not specifically mentioned IGZO technology so it’s unclear if that would be on board if Samsung chooses Sharp.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Software

Thus far, only one Samsung Galaxy Note 3 software rumor has sprouted up. That rumor is courtesy of Android Geeks which claims that the rumored Samsung Orb camera feature, that was originally thought to be coming on the Galaxy S4, will be coming to the Galaxy Note 3 later this year.

The feature is said to be Samsung’s version of Google’s Photo Sphere, a camera feature that allows users to take 360 degree panoramas. The feature is found in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Up to this point, that’s all that we’ve heard about the Galaxy Note 3 software though we imagine that Samsung will not only be releasing new and possibly improved S Pen applications, but also some of the features that we saw arrive on the Samsung Galaxy S4 including the many features for the camera.

We also expect that Samsung will have the latest Android software on board as well, whether it’s Android 4.2 or Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, which is expected to debut in May at Google I/O.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Carriers

It’s April, and typically we don’t hear anything about possible carriers until later in the year, and sometimes, not until after launch. This time around, we’ve already heard one rumor that suggested that Samsung already showed off a mockup to AT&T executives. While that doesn’t necessarily mean AT&T is going to offer it, it does mean that it’s a possibility.

And given the successes of the Galaxy Note 2, we imagine that AT&T won’t be the only carrier that offers the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the same carriers that offer the Galaxy Note 2, offer the Galaxy Note 3. If true, that would mean AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon.
