Acer Planning $149 iPad mini Android Competitor

According to the latest report, Acer may be considering lowering the price of its 7.9-inch Android tablet in an effort to better compete against Apple’s iPad mini on price. The Acer Iconia A1 tablet, currently priced at $249, would see a $100 price cut, according to DigiTimes, if Acer does go through with its plan. That would place the Iconia A1 tablet at roughly $149, or roughly $180 cheaper than Apple’s entry-level iPad mini.

Acer, which isn’t shy on releasing more affordably priced products in a bid to gain market share, had debuted the Iconia Tab B1 tablet for $99 in the past. The 7-inch tablet Iconia Tab B1 would compete in the same space as the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7 tablets; both these competing slates cost double what the Iconia Tab B1 retails for.

The chief complaint with the Iconia Tab B1 was the display wasn’t as good as competing models that were priced more expensively. It’s unclear if the Iconia Tab A1 would suffer from the same fate. Yet, despite its shortcoming, the Iconia Tab B1 was quite a successful product and accounted for as much as 75 percent of Acer’s first quarter tablet sales this year according to a report on Android Beat

201821[1]The Iconia Tab A1 uses an AU Optronics display and a more modest processor from MediaTek. As such, the tablet may not be a speed demon, but given its low price point it may not need to be.

Samsung had recently announced its WiFi-only S-Pen-enabled Galaxy Note 8.0 for the U.S. market to compete against the iPad mini. The Samsung tablet retails for a $400 entry price point, but Samsung is hoping that the S-Pen along with an extensive software suite will help sway users to the Galaxy Note experience of its 8-inch slate.

One quality tablet on the market right now is the new Novo 7 Venus… an Android 4.1 tablet for $149 that’s available in the U.S. through a site called TabletSprint — and compares closely to the Nexus 7 — featuring a Quad Core processor and 1280×800 HD IPS Screen; while also offering a 2-Megapixel rear camera, a MicroSD memory card slot, and an HDMI 1080p port; plus 3G internet connection through its USB port, all of which aren’t featured on the Nexus 7 —
