iPhone 6 with Large Screen Still a Possibility

Despite downplaying a larger screen iPhone, Apple CEO Tim Cook left the door open for a large screen iPhone in the future meaning that a large screen iPhone 6 remains a distinct possibility as Apple tries to compete with devices like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, both of which sport large, high-resolution displays.

In today’s earnings call, Tim Cook revealed that the company has some amazing products in the pipeline for 2013 and beyond. Cook declined to discuss specifics but rumors suggest that the company could reveal an iPhone 5S, iPad 5 and an iPad mini 2 with a Retina Display later on this year. One other device that has been at the top of the rumor mill is a larger screen iPhone, a device that some analysts believe could arrive as early as this year.

Despite Tim Cook downplaying a large screen iPhone, an iPhone 6 with a large display is a possibility.

Despite Tim Cook downplaying a large screen iPhone, an iPhone 6 with a large display is a possibility.

Tim Cook put a bit of a damper on those rumors however as Apple’s CEO downplayed a larger screen iPhone saying that the company isn’t ready to release an iPhone with a larger display. Cook states that he believes that despite advances in display technology, the iPhone 5 has the best display in the industry. He also believes that while some customers value the size of the display, other consumers “value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, and portability.”

Cook went on to say that while “competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display,” his company would not release a larger screen iPhone until those trade-offs don’t exist.

Apple has taken a similar approach in the past, waiting several years before it upgraded the size of the iPhone from 3.5-inches to its current 4-inch size. It also waited to deliver 4G LTE connectivity, even as it became the norm. And while its competitors have launched devices sporting NFC for mobile payments, we have yet to see an iPhone arrive with an NFC chip on board.

Cook comments, while downplaying an immediate arrival of a large screen iPhone, don’t rule one out completely. In fact, he leaves the door open for a large screen iPhone down the road, so long as these parameters are met. Rumors have suggested that the iPhone 5S will feature a 4-inch display, much like the iPhone 5, and given Cook’s stance, a large screen iPhone doesn’t appear to be in the cards for 2013.

However, there is always next year and it’s possible that Apple could introduce not only a more powerful Retina+ display but also a larger screen option for those that need more real estate.

Apple’s CEO also hinted that it has plenty to announce later this year but hinted that many, if not all of those announcements, will come during the fall seemingly dashing chances of an iPhone 5S launch this summer.

Gosh Apple, who cares. LTE was out over a year before you released a phone with it, phones with larger screens have been out for quite some time. Now you expect everyone to hold their breath while you wait until 2014 (most likely in the fall) to release a phone with a decent size screen, FORGET IT. You no long are the leading innovator of anything regarding cell phones. You have turned into a “Me too” organization.

“value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, and portability.” -Cook

I am not trying to say that the iphone display resolution and quality are bad but the only thing better about the iphone5’s display size is power consumption and maybe portability.

And the fact that it looks superior to any and all smartphone displays out there. And that’s not subjective, it’s calculated fact by industry leading standards.

We as consumers care so much more about white balance and vivid colours, over the screen size. Hurry up apple, your falling behind.

I’ve come to the realization that the larger screens in smart phones are like the .com bubble, meaning at some point in the future they will become iPhone like again. Some of the phones with the lergest screens have even bigger that the ones for gaming, namely PSP and Nintendo DS, so the reason isn’t to benefit with better gaming experience. Moreover, those bigger screens on some smart phones can’t compete with the smallest tablets, just because they’ve got a phone built-in noone is goint to change the bigger screen in a tablet for a smart phone with a smaller screen. Then there is the issue of a bigger screen that most people can’t use with one hand to make a single call, ti’s like trying to introduce again the brick phone, just becouse it would have a bigger battery.
