Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Prototypes: S4 Looks & Flexible Display Reported

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung’s rumored Galaxy Note 2 sequel, is expected in September and we are already hearing rumors about three possible Galaxy Note 3 prototypes.

Over the weekend an alleged Galaxy Note 3 photo leaked showing a smartphone with a 5.9-inch display complete with a collection of rumored specs.

According to SamMobile, this is not the Galaxy Note 3, but the ZOPO ZP950 a $200 off-brand Android smartphone with a 5.7-inch display. The publication has a good track record with details from their Samsung insider, though there are occasional mis-steps.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Prototypes

SamMobile doesn’t leave it at that though. The publication claims their insider is aware of three Samsung Galaxy Note 3 prototypes in the works at Samsung. These are likely the prototypes or Galaxy Note 3 mock ups that Samsung allegedly shared with AT&T earlier this year.

The three Samsung Galaxy Note 3 prototypes are described as,

  • Galaxy Note 3 with a Galaxy S4 inspired design
  • Galaxy Note 3 with a completely new design
  • Galaxy Note 3 with a flexible display

We’ve already seen one Galaxy Note 3 concept that uses the Galaxy S4 design language. The Galaxy Note 3 concept below from concept-phones shows a Galaxy Note 3 with a thinner, flatter design that uses the same metal band as the Galaxy S4 and similar rounded corners, but with even less bezel space at the top and bottom.

Samsung reportedly is working on three Galaxy Note 3 prototypes, including one with Galaxy S4 inspired design.

One rumor is that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will feature a new design, possibly with metal instead of plastic. This rumor popped up in mid-April, though some claim it was put into place by HTC as a move to bolster the metal design of the HTC One. While early rumors claim this design is Galaxy S4 influenced, it is talking about a metal Galaxy S4 prototype that never made it to mass production.

Samsung is capable of delivering an all metal design while leaving access to an SD card, SIM card and removable battery. HTC recently showed this is also possible on a modern looking smartphone with the HTC One for China, which features a removable back.

One rumor claims Samsung is working on A Galaxy Note 3 with a metal design like the HTC One, complete with a removable back. This Chinese HTC One variant features a removable metal back for access to an SD card and dual-SIM cards.

The rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 3 prototype with a flexible display is perhaps one of the most attractive options. Samsung showed off the company’s Youm technology at CES 2013, where executives demoed devices with screens that curved around the edge of a device and concepts with bigger ambitions.

In late March a Galaxy Note 3 rumor claimed Samsung is working on a unbreakable flexible display for the Note 3. This display would reportedly deliver a more durable smartphone screen. This rumor claims the Note 3 will feature a 5.9-inch display with a 1080P HD resolution.

There are many rumors of flexible displays on Samsung devices, as far back as the Galaxy Note 2. Despite competitors like LG promising to deliver a flexible display smartphone in the last quarter of 2013, new rumors claim Samsung is struggling with an essential part of the production which could keep a flexible display out of the Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 display is at the center of many rumors with a 5.9-inch and 6.3-inch display rumored. It is possible the 6.3-inch display is actually part of the Samsung Galaxy Mega line of smartphones. The 5.9-inch screen size keeps coming up, much like the 4.99-inch size did in Galaxy S4 rumors during the lead up to it’s launch.

The latest details point to a Samsung Unpacked Event at IFA 2013 in Berlin in September. If true, this would very likely be the Galaxy Note 3 launch event, and would set the device up for a Q4 2013 release. No definitive information is available  but it would likely arrive on multiple carriers in the U.S., like the Galaxy Note 2.
