Jawbone Acquires BodyMedia, Opens Up Platform

By  |  0 Comments

Today Jawbone announced that it acquired health tracking company BodyMedia. It also announced the launch of the new Up platform that lets developers use an API to use Jawbone data in their own apps.

BodyMedia is one of a number of companies that track user’s health instead of just fitness or exercise. The company produces a number of health trackers that track a variety of biometrics including heart rate, calories burned and temperature. Jawbone will use BodyMedia to help improve its apps.

Jawbone may also decide to produce devices similar to what BodyMedia makes now. The company will continue to sell the current devices, but makes no promises about how long they will be around.

Jawbone Up platform

While the acquisition will help Jawbone enhance its apps later, the company’s other news of the day will help make its apps better today. Today Jawbone opened the API for the Up platform that lets developers access data from the app and fitness tracker for use in their own apps.

The new Jawbone Up platform is now available for iPhone users with ten supported apps, with an Android release sometime later. The supported apps include IFTTT, LoseIt!, Maxwell Health, MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal, Notch, RunKeeper, Sleepio, Wello and Withings.

Examples of how the system works include using a Withings Wi-Fi scale to import weight into the Up app to give users more context about how effective their workouts and diet are. Users can also use their Up fitness tracker to get more data on exercise logged in RunKeeper or MayMyFitness, which will make it easier to compare individual workouts .

The Jawbone Up platform makes the Up one of the most versatile fitness trackers on the market at the moment. The tracker itself lacks a few features like a display and Bluetooth, but the integration with other popular apps, devices and services makes it more enticing than it was before.
