iPhone 5S Could Usher in 1080P FaceTime, Sharper Selfies

The iPhone 5S could deliver a slew of sharper looking self portraits for Facebook and better looking 1080P HD FaceTime calling from the iPhone.

The iPhone 5 currently supports 720P HD video which looks very good, even of 4G LTE, but users looking for better video quality may find a reason to upgrade to the iPhone 5S this fall.

OmniVision announced today that a new super slim sensor is going into production this summer with the ability to deliver 1080P video at 60 frames per second.

The new OmniVision OV2724 is tiny at 5 x 5 x 3.5mm, which is smaller than the OmniVision sensor found in the iPhone 5. A teardown of the iPhone 5 revealed the OmniVision OV2C3B which measures 5.5 x 6 x 3.6 mm.

The iPhone 5S may feature a new camera capable of taking 1080P Video and better self portraits.

Apple is likely to stick with a trusted supplier, especially in an iPhone ‘S’ upgrade, which makes the new 1080P front facing camera an easy pick.

In addition to the higher resolution OmniVision claims the new front facing camera can deliver better high-light and low light performance, which should mean better looking self portraits at sunny tourist spots and better looking FaceTime calls from poorly lit hotel rooms.

Apple is reportedly working an improved camera for the iPhone 5S. While the iPhone 5 can hold it’s own against the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4, there is certainly room for improvement. Most of the iPhone 5S rumors point to the rear camera, with a 12MP camera that delivers better low light performance. However, there is a rumor of a new iOS 7 camera app that uses both cameras, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Dual Shot Feature, which would benefit from a 1080P front facing camera.

The new sensor is in sample production and should enter mass production by the third quarter of 2013. This means it could be ready to go tino a phone as early as June or July. Currently the iPhone 5S is expected in the fall, with some estimates pushing it back to October or November. This leaves room for Apple to deliver a better front and back camera experience without adding to the crowded internal setup.

Other iPhone 5S rumors suggest the phone will gain a fingerprint reader integrated into the home button, and that a mobile payment solution will debut alongside an iRadio subscription service and iOS 7. Users will reportedly need to wait for the iPhone 6 to get a larger screen.
