iOS 6.1.4 Problems: Battery Life & Other Issues Hit iPhone 5

Published

on

After just about every iOS update from Apple, iPhone owners come out of the woodwork and complain about issues with the latest software. Apple’s latest release, iOS 6.1.4 has been no different with iPhone 5 owners clamoring on about issues with the update including abnormal battery drain, issues with the speaker and more.

Last week, Apple released its latest update to its iOS 6 operating system and the fourth update to its iOS 6.1 update since it arrived back in January of this year. iOS 6.1.4 rolled out in a bit of a surprise update to iPhone 5 owners, simply because it did not pass through a beta period. The update, which was only 11.5MB in size, was apparently aimed at the device’s speakerphone as the only listed change in the log was an “Updated audio profile for speakerphone.”

Read: iOS 6.1.4 on iPhone 5 Review.

Is Apple planning WWDC 2013 for June 10th? If so, what does that tell us about the iPhone 5S release timing?

Apple’s iOS 6.1.4 update is causing headaches for iPhone 5 owners.

Thus far, we haven’t seen a significant improvement with the speakerphone as the experience has been on par with how it was on iOS 6.1.3, the previous version of iOS.

As with any iOS update though, there is always a chance of unforeseen changes to the user experience, for better or for worse, meaning some bugs may have quietly been fixed while others may have hopped on board the latest update to plague users.

iOS 6.1.4 appears as though it isn’t immune to this phenomenon as iPhone 5 owners have started complaining about a number of problems that they seem to be encountering after installing the latest update.

Quieter Than Usual

While there have been some complaints about iOS 6.1.4, they have been quieter than usual. After the releases of iOS 6.1, iOS 6.1.2, and iOS 6.1.3, there were an avalanche of complaints from iPhone and iPad owners about the number of bugs still harassing them after installing the latest firmware.

In the case of iOS 6.1.4, complaints have been few and far between. Our experience thus far with iOS 6.1.4 indicates that the software isn’t much different than iOS 6.1.3, the latter of which was an extremely stable experience for us. Of course, experiences different from user to user and just because we haven’t seen issues doesn’t mean that there aren’t any out there.

In fact, there are several that iPhone 5 owners have been complaining about.

iOS 6.1.4 Battery Drain

iPhone-battery

iOS 6.1.4 battery life has not been kind to some iPhone 5 owners.

Maybe the loudest issue that we’ve been hearing is in regards to the battery life on the iPhone 5. Users have been reporting abnormal battery drain with their iPhone with some users complaining of a massive battery hit when life idle overnight.

It doesn’t appear to be as widespread as the battery life issues we saw emerge in iOS 6.1 and iOS 6.1.3 but nonetheless, iPhone 5 owners are having problems after updating to the latest software.

We recommend taking a look at our iPhone 5 battery life tips and seeing if one of those resolutions helps to mitigate the issues. If they don’t, it’s best to take the iPhone 5 in to an Apple Store in order to get it diagnosed. As we’ve reported in the past, what appears to be an iOS battery drain issue could very well be a defective battery.

We should also point out that some users are having an adverse affect with battery life with it apparently becoming more stable after installing the latest update. One user tells us that a game that would normally take his battery down 10% in 10 minutes now only drains his battery about 4% in the same amount of time.

Wi-Fi Issues

It appears that the Wi-Fi issues that have been plaguing iPhone 5 owners since the phone’s arrival back in September are continuing to plague owners of the device and in particular, some users are having trouble holding down a connection after installing iOS 6.1.4. We’re also still seeing people with grayed out Wi-Fi.

As we’ve recommended numerous times, users who are experiencing these issues should check out this discussion for an unofficial remedy or head to Apple’s website for an official fix.

Bluetooth Problems

In addition to Wi-Fi issues, we’re seeing and hearing about some issues pairing the iPhone 5 to Bluetooth devices after installing iOS 6.1.4. These don’t seem to be widespread but we recommend checking out this fix if for some reason the problem keeps persisting after installing the update.

Speaker Issue

We saw this with iOS 6.1.3 and now, we’re seeing it with iOS 6.1.4. Evidently, after installing iOS 6.1.4, some users are seeing their speakers suddenly stop working. We can confirm that this happened to an iPhone 4S with iOS 6.1.3 but so far, we haven’t seen it occur on an iPhone 5.

At least one user who tried a hard reset of the iPhone 5 claims that it didn’t work. We still haven’t found a reliable fix for this issue so it’s probably best to take it into an Apple Store to get the phone diagnosed.

Problems from iOS 6.1.3 Persist

iPhone and iPad owners who did not get the upgrade to iOS 6.1.4 are still complaining about issues with the iOS 6.1.3 update that was released many weeks ago.

We check out the Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. HTC One vs. iPhone 5 camera comparison.

Problems from iOS 6.1.3 persist after iOS 6.1.4.

We’ve heard from iPhone 4S owners who are experiencing battery drain and Wi-Fi issues similar to the ones iPhone 5 owners are encountering. Users are complaining about issues with accuracy of GPS and of course, the volume issues with the speaker that iPhone users ran into after updating are still plaguing them.

Bluetooth is also an issue for some owners that remain on iOS 6.1.3.

iOS 6.1.5?

The iPhone 5 runs iOS 6 while the HTC One is on Android 4.1.2 with HTC Sense 5.

iOS 6.1.5 isn’t a given for iPhone and iPad owners on iOS 6.1.4 and iOS 6.1.3.

While these issues are apparently afflicting iOS 6.1.4 and iOS 6.1.3 users, there is no guarantee that Apple will release iOS 6.1.5 to cure these lingering bugs.

Many of them are issues that have been cropping up after every single iOS 6 update and they don’t appear to be affecting a large portion of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. Bugs like the Exchange battery drain bug, which was encountered by millions of owners, are the types of issues that provoke Apple into releasing a quick bug fix.

So while iOS 6.1.5 might be on the minds of iPhone 5 owners experiencing bugs in the latest update and those still having issues with iOS 6.1.3, iOS 7 could very well be the next update for many of these devices.

No issues on any of our 4 iPhone 5 handsets. So when you say “nonetheless, iPhone 5 owners are having problems after updating to the latest software” you are WAY OVER generalizing. I read MacSurfer and get my feed on Zite, Flipbaord etc., and yours, for better or worse, is the first mention I’ve seen. Doesn’t sound too wide-spread to me!

          And your point is?
I got more info from his comment than yours.
I am unhappy with APPLE as he is. It is true that every time there is an update, my device is negative in some way.
I am tired of being a BETA tester for APPLE.
WE are BETA testers for APPLE every time there is a patch/update. It seems every APPLE product has some kind of flaw that WE have to go into researching for answeres on the web. Therefore, our feedback is a /report toward APPLE. Hence, WE are BETA testers.

Rob, you didn’t put two spaces after your sentences to start a new sentence.
I don’t care, but practice what you preach!
          And STFU.

As well as my i5. No issues or problems on this end. I recently had the note 2 and before that htc phones galore. The note and all of my htc phones would freeze and slow down. battery life on those devices were absolutely horrible. My i5 is by far the fastest and most reliable phone I’ve had yet.

The major issue I’ve had with battery drain on the iPhone 5, and the issue I assume everyone else is having with it, is related to the geo-fence. My battery will drain 50% in 8 hours sitting idle while I sleep if an application like Find Friends or Reminders is allowed to use a geo-fence. If I go into Privacy -> Location Settings and disable just the applications with the pink GeoFence icon, my battery life extends well over 24 hours on a single charge.

So I believe the issue, and why it isn’t happening to everyone, is because it’s related to geo-fence. How many people enable a geo-fence on their phones? I wouldn’t have known about it other than the fact that Find Friends for whatever reason is *always* tracking my location even if no one is currently tracking me on their phone.

That makes sense. I also find that people with Verizon tend to do better than other carriers. GSM uses more juice than CDMA. People doubt that I charge my iPhone every 5-7 days and claim theirs cannot even last that long if they turn it off. Well, I leave it on and use it for that time period — maybe 1-2 hours a day. Verizon also has excellent reception and data bandwidth. I have a Clear wireless modem — 4G. It’s the same service that Sprint uses for their 4G. My Verizon 3G iPhone consistently gets better speed (measured on speedtest.net) than Clear/Sprint 4G (and yes, I get good reception on the Clear modem — I am half a mile from the tower, which faces the window).

If you want some tips on how to prolong battery life (applies to any device with a lithium ion battery), check out these tips:

you people are realley upset your mind. No, just angered, why you bought a iphone. that software, the iOS 6.1.4 update, updated or evolved itself, mean it was jailbreak. the artificial inteligence, was intercepted, by anothers software, of another hardware firm. it’s simple, iPhone, iPad, i what else!?! ii understoid, captain? only samsung, lands at court trail even for software simmilar programms, although a limited license samsung bought. sony has a contract, and some projects with apple in the medical sector. the applications, operating systems and hardware of all firms with simmilar products are intruse each other itself. whom to blame? engeneers are forbidden to touch, the same as medicines are. KILL OR BE KILLED, or JUST KILL KILL KILL, THE MACHINES ARE TAKING YOU MIND PEOPLE, WHAT LAND LANDED LAST AT MARS. THE U.S.A. DID OR NOT, LIKE THE FLAG ON THE MOON, SO BLAME THEM. NOT apple, never, nerver against family.

If you don’t like Apple…go the fu#k away and have your happy life. Why B%tch about it here? And just to be clear David, learn to spell and speak like an intelligent person or SHUT THE F#CK UP! As with all the rest of you Apple haters. Enjoy your HTC or whatever platform that you use, but if you have bad experience, CHANGE! This is America and you have the right to do that. Get over it. If you don’t like Apple, that’s cool. Quit ranting, you’re wasting our time. You might be enjoying this a little too much.
    Peace out,
    Mike

“learn to spell and speak like an intelligent person”

I suggest you take your own advice… Hurling insults and curse words isn’t exactly the way an intelligent person speaks either. And no intelligent human would be so blind towards issues that MANY people are reporting, nor would he be trying to suppress others voicing their concerns and opinions about products they purchased and are unhappy with, that’s called fanboyism…

      “This is America”

Exactly, so maybe you should get acquainted with the First Amendment (freedom of speech, if you’re unfamiliar with it), just like they have a right to pick whatever phone they want, everyone here also has the right to speak their mind (much like you’re doing)… If people want to complain, they have every right to, especially when it’s to call out a corporation who releases bad beta hardware and software to the masses while claiming that it’s a finished product (as is the case here)… Otherwise, if people didn’t complain, nothing would get fixed.

So I suggest YOU get over it, if you don’t like the fact that people are bringing up legitimate concerns, issues and complaints, then maybe YOU should go away… If you’re so blinded by your obvious Apple fanboyism that you ignore all the issues surrounding Apple products and attack those who are looking for answers and possible fixes for their issues, then maybe you shouldn’t be wasting your time reading and commenting/ranting on articles about issues with Apple products.

Everything has been great until IOS 6.1.4 update. You know how you can plug a mp3 cord into the speaker/headphone jack and use the Iphone to play music in your car.

Now my music is at a much lower level. I have to put it at 100% capacity and it isn’t even noticably loud unless I turn up the speaker volume in the car as well.

I hate it !!! I want to revert back to IOS 6.1.3. Is there anyway I can?

I have major battery drain issues since 6.1.4 on my iPhone 5, the battery is nowhere near lasting as long as it did in 6.1.3, been using it just over an hour and its down to about 20-30% I can’t say because I’m restoring to see if it fixes the issue, but it’s draining more than its ever done :(

The Apple. Store folks have been very helpful all 4 times I have taken my iphone5 there to have the. Battery problem fixed. It is still not working and I have tried everything suggested. There’s a problem with ios6 and Apple needs to deal with it. I’m tired of uninstalling and manually reinstalling apps.

I have an iphone5 and the reception level is pathetic. My wife has an iPhone 4S and sometimes she will have 3 bars and my iPhone 5 will have no service. My old 4 was much better. If I go back to Apple they might give me a new phone but I would rather have an iPhone 4s

New Phone 5. After five days of normal use the speaker stopped working SOMETIMES! Bought in NYC BUT I am in Israel. Spoke over 90 minutes with Apple technician on the telephone and even tried to restore. It worked, the ring was restored. Set the alarm and went to sleep. The ring did not work when I woke up. VERY FUSTRATING!

I have had it with Apple as my I phone 5 has been again filled with issues. To start this is my second I phone as the first one I got would not connect to WIFI at all, so it was replaced. The second one not has in and out sound issues as the sound disappears for hours or days and then will come back for a short period. Not a speaker issue I am told. Also the screen blacks out and you cannot get it on until it is ready to turn on. Even plugging in the charger does not get it going. NO MORE I phones for me.

I also had this problem. My first attempt on fixing this problem what I did was, i created a back up. Then I reset my phone. After resetting, I restored my datas. But then, my battery is still draining so fast. So my last option is to reset everything even my personal files like contacts, photos, music, apps. Atlast it works for me! My battery is doing great. I think the battery bug is from the apps. Hopefully apple will fix this bugs soon! You can try resetting your iphone, it might work for you as well. But if not, you can restore your data again, if and only if you have a backup of your files on your laptop.

We have seen this alot in our shop lately. The iPhone 5 batteries are definately a quick drain for many users. However I do have to say that many times poeple need to be aware that they have GPS going, Bluetooth, Skyppe, Apps, Games, etc. There is a lot of things that can be causing this tyope of issue. We put a video together showing you how to change your own iPhone 5 battery if you are interested.
