Sony Xperia S Jelly Bean Roll Out Inches Closer

By  |  0 Comments

The Sony Xperia S Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, which has been confirmed for a roll out by the end of May, has gotten closer to rolling out as a new version of the software has been certified, just another step towards a release date that still hasn’t been announced.

A short time ago, after months of waiting and hearing complaints from consumers, Sony finally gave Sony Xperia S owners a time table for the missing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. Instead of providing a specific date, the company decided to let owners know that the software would be rolling out starting at the end of May.

It now appears as though Sony will be keeping that promise as the software has inched closer to its arrival with a certification from the PTCRB getting discovered by XperiaBlog.

It appears that this build 6.2.B.0.200, approved today, is a little different than the leaked build that we saw emerge for owners back in April. That firmware came with build number 6.2.B.0.197. It’s not clear exactly what’s different between the two versions but it now appears as though the leaked build won’t be the final version of the update, something that should not come as much of a surprise given that Sony still has some time to perfect the software before releasing it.

While this isn’t necessarily a sign that the software could roll out earlier than anticipated, it is a sign that things are moving in the right direction for Sony Xperia S owners as far as the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is concerned.

Keep in mind, the roll out that is set to begin this month is likely going to be for the unbranded version of the phone, a roll out that will then be followed by carrier branded devices at the discretion of the carrier. No timing has been released for any carriers but those that own a model on a carrier will likely be waiting for several weeks before the software arrives.

Once it does, Xperia S owners will be getting what looks to be a massive upgrade. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is outdated and while Android 4.1 itself is old, it does bring some likeable features to the table including a smoother user interface, improved multitasking and widgets, a better stock Browser and Camera app, and more.

It’s unclear if this will be the last update for the Sony Xperia S or if Android 4.2 Jelly Bean will roll out at some point in the future.
